Irish natives, Irene Ní Chuinn & Martin Quinn hailing from County Meath formed One Flew Over in 2019; since then they’ve released some lovely tracks with ‘Not Good For Me’ being their 4th offering. Martin is a seasoned musician and producer having performed with TURN, Eimear Quinn and Hail The Ghost to name a few. He masterfully produced this song for One Flew Over and really captures the soulful tones of lead singer Irene whilst at the same time ensuring exemplary balance and clarity amongst the other musicians – Andrew Quinn (drums), Martin Quinn (bass, guitars, piano, keys, backing vocals), David Doyle (cello) and James Quinn (additional keys) – who add a real breadth to the sound
The song opens with an quick soiree into the ethereal before the guitar swiftly takes centre stage and you feel the groove of this piece, laying the foundation for the strong vocals to enter with “Don’t lock me in, your prison bars can’t hold me”. The tale is of bad relationships and wanting to break free from the person in question but feeling strangely drawn to them at the same time; the inevitability of the end of a relationship once the realisation hits that this person is no longer adding, only taking away. The “you’re not good for me” refrain, repeated in order to bring home the point, sometimes it takes a lot of strength to vocalise when something is not quite right.
The song is charged with emotion, layering soulful rock with pop undertones; an all round winner. It’s catchy and unapologetic, displaying a beautiful vocal delivery and range by Irene surrounded by accomplished musicianship.
