Holly Humberstone – Work In Progress: EP Review

Holly Humberstone follows her 2023 debut with Work In Progress; a four track EP of new music.

Release Date: 15th March 2024

Label: Darkroom Records / Interscope Records / Polydor

Format: CD / Vinyl / Digital

Holly Humberstone continues to spotlight her talent in her highly anticipated four-track EP Work In Progress following the popular release of her debut album Paint My Bedroom Black, released in October 2023. Holly announced to fans on Discord she would be releasing a collection of her unreleased tracks along with the mp3 files.

The British-born singer-songwriter welcomes us to her EP with the lead single Dive, released back in February. A chill-type beat clearly shows Holly’s development since her last album; it has a more of a rocky sound. Dive depicts a strong message about wanting to change herself. The song can be seen as reminiscent of The Walls are Way Too Thin.

Work In Progress is the title track from the album. It tells the story of Holly’s relationship in which she believes she can be the one to change the one she loves. The beat is calm and ties in perfectly with the meaningful lyrics.

Down Swinging is the penultimate track on the EP. The lyricism shows Humberstone’s vulnerability and reality of life, making it relatable to her audience:

In this stress dream
Every day is Halloween
I had a panic attack on the underground
Man, I felt like a circus freak

Easy Tiger sends the EP to a beautiful closure allowing listeners to reflect and come back to reality through the melodic guitar and lyricism. It also helps to gain an understanding of life situations from that point of view. The background also includes sound from a video of Holly and her family on holiday. Adding a distinctly personal touch, the song gives the listener chance to experience a deeper connection with the song.

Holly continues to shine on this EP of unreleased tracks and she is so deserving of the recognition she is getting. The 4 tracks depict common themes of relationships and everyday life. Following the release of the new EP, Holly has her upcoming headline UK and Europe tour to promote the album beginning in this month and she will be performing at highly celebrated venues across the UK such as her biggest headline show to date at the Eventim Apollo.
