Hot on the heels of his appearance at Fire Records 40th anniversary birthday batch in Hackney, Steve Wynn made a return visit to the Oxted sessions.
Steve Wynn likes Oxted and Oxted likes Steve Wynn ! Having played the first gig of the sessions in 2018, he returned to play the Barn Theatre last year with The Dream Syndicate (a mighty fine show). The intimate and welcoming setting of The Ginistry proved the perfect venue for the New York based singer songwriter and with a quality opening act in the person of Andrew Rumsey, it proved a resounding success ! Rumsey accompanied by guitarist David Perry played a short set centered around his recently released album Evensongs. Strong songs and an assured performance went down a storm with The Ginistry audience.
Wynn, displaying his usual relaxed charm, was in friendly territory but that didn’t stop him from putting on a spirited performance (even breaking his first guitar string in ten years didn’t derail him). Jumping between Dream Syndicate, solo tracks, Miracle 3 and Baseball Project, Wynn proved that a good song works in every setting, the autobahn anthem Put Some Miles On being a prime example ! Some of the best songs in the evening were deeper cuts such as Journeyman and 1976, both displaying different layers (sporting yarns and reflections on life in general). The Dream Syndicate classics weren’t forgotten (Tell Me When It’s Over, The Days Of Wine And Roses as well as some chosen cuts from The Miracle 3 (Southern California Line, Amphetamine). A fine evening and a testament to promoter Dom Damesick’s efforts to bring quality music to Oxted. Long live The Sessions !
