The Muldoons – We Saw The View: Album Review

The Muldoons return with their second album We Saw The View, following the release of 2020’s Made For Each Other. Does the second album hit the same?

Release Date: 29th November 2024

Label: Last Night From Glasgow

Format: Vinyl LP / CD / Digital

We Saw The View is the new second album from The Muldoons. The band formed in the 90s, but disbanded before releasing any music. They then reunited 20 years later for their debut album Made For Each Other, which entered the Official Scottish Albums Chart Top 75 in their native Scotland.

The Scottish alternative rock 5 piece (made up of Davy Brook, Andy McPake, Gerry Mullen, Tim Campbell and Greg Bolland) open the album with 27 Year Itch; powerful instrumentals build up to the entry of Gerry’s lead vocals. Tim’s distinctive guitar playing creates a great first impression on the new album, along with Andy’s drums. Just to top it off, the vocals on this track are passionate yet mellow.

The prominent instrumentation continues in the single released in October Why Do You Care?. The single radiates a sense of freedom and not having a care in the world.

“Don’t give a damn if your feelings hurt
Oh why does it matter to you’

The Muldoons’ vulnerable side is explored in Lost Without You. This track in particular showcases the perfect blend between the trumpets (played by Greg) and the lead vocals. The overall sound is unique yet nostalgic and the brass instrumentals make the song stand out.

“Every morning I wake with you,
I thank my lucky stars, I’d be lost without you”

To conclude the band’s second album, Davy, Andy, Gerry, Tim and Greg shine on the final song Audacity, released in 2022The repeated lyrics create the sense of a closure to an album. The song follows the perspective of admiring someone so much.

“Caught in your beautiful net,
I’ll never forget the night that we met,
Caught up in your charms, held in by your arms.

We Saw The View is the album to listen to on a cold night sat by the fire. The set shows the evolution of the band from their first album to the present day. The band say when they wrote the songs on their first album that they “were young, falling in and out of love every week, getting drunk and generally trying to figure out what the hell was going on. Our new album, We Saw The View sees us all grown up and dealing with life, as fathers, sons, partners -reflecting on relationships past and present and, of course dealing with our kids who are getting drunk and falling in love every week.”
