LISA CRAWLEY

Hailing from New Zealand and now resident in Los Angeles, Lisa Crawley is an acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and in-demand session musician. Her career (so far) has taken in such diverse achievements as performances with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, opening for (amongst others) John Mayer, Suzanne Vega, Paul Weller and Simply Red and having her music featured in numerous television and movie productions.

Lisa’s forthcoming EP, New Girl Syndrome, is scheduled for release on 25th April. Keep an eye on these pages for further details and a review. Those in the know – and that’s a group that includes such august publications as Rolling Stone AU – expect it to build upon the success of its predecessor EP, 2024’s Love (In A Major).

A FIRST TASTER

What You Can Do is the first taster that we’ve been given of the EP delights to come. It deals with the issue of being constantly questioned about one’s identity beyond one’s professional persona. For a musician, this can manifest itself as a reluctance to say ‘no’ to work or people that don’t serve the objective in hand. As Lisa so eloquently puts it in the chorus to What You Can Do: “You can only do so much baby, you’ve got your work cut out for you. Take a breath, in fact – go and take two. you are more than what you can do.” We’ve all been in that particular boat, I suspect. As Lisa elaborates: “I’ve been labelled as a workaholic, but saying ‘no’ can be scary. Creating space to explore other parts of myself is confronting but important.”

The song starts life as a tuneful, intimate piano ballad that quickly develops a gently rocking theme. Lisa’s voice is calming and reassuring and John Spiker’s production intended to ‘merge the retro and modern, adding layers to the piano-focused track ‘. It’s a triumph that delivers a sound that’s rich and sophisticated, giving due prominence to Lisa’s vocals and lyrical message.

What You Can Do is an enticing foretaste of what New Girl Syndrome has on offer. Watch this space…
