Monkey Intrusion is an independent rock band based in Trieste, North East of Italy. Their music is a melting of genres influenced by the different backgrounds of band members. A project that started in the summer of 2013 from the ashes of a previous band formed by Marco Plesnicar (bass), Vincenzo Reina (guitars, voice), and Enrico Goti (voice, guitars), saw Marco Bertoli (drums) joining the group in 2021.
Their Pussycats And Monkeymen album was released in May 2024. It’s a record that follows the ups and downs of the fictional character Cicuta Weston on a journey through the emotions, observations, and sometimes fears of a dystopic society. The music shifts in genres to underscore what the lyrics portray.
Vincenzo Reina from the band tells us why Emily Barker is so special.
a one woman band
Emily Barker is an Australian enchanting songwriter and solo artist who has been writing amazing music for almost twenty years. She is a one woman band, sometimes backed by other musicians, but mostly singing and playing alone with her guitar.
I didn’t know her until I saw her playing in Munich at Milla Club in 2015. It was a revelation. I have to admit so far I was not a big fan of folk music, being more oriented towards progressive and alternative rock, but Emily’s performance was mind blowing. She has powerful high pitch and at the same time warm voice and plays acoustic and electric guitar flawlessly. Many of her compositions are little masterpieces.
NOSTALGIA
When I heard my favorite song Nostalgia for the first time I was latterly moved. A rare and special artist with a disarming simplicity and beauty. As the band say – “All that matters is the song. It’s all about the music. Listen to the monkey in you.“
Our thanks to Vincenzo for the insight into an artist who we also rate very highly.
