Don’t Wake The Neighbours on The Hives: Why I Love

Don’t Wake The Neighbours is a modern rock band from London, formed in mid 2021 after studying together at university. Their MO is all about catchy hooks and harmonies mixed with classic rock guitars and drums and influences from all across the musical spectrum. They call it ‘perfect chaos’.

Lead singer Jenny Dore wrote their just released new single, My Place In The Sun many years ago on her parent’s piano. Some years later, it became the first track Don’t Wake the Neighbours ever played together.

Jenny now joins us to tell us why she loves The Hives

loud music!

Ever since I was younger I’ve loved loud music. I love the weight that it puts on you and the power that comes through it. So, when I discovered The Hives a few years ago, it was an instant yes. Their earlier, more punk, music has a chaos that feels perfectly curated, and their more recent tracks are more polished, but still have that intensity and captivating energy.

I take a lot of inspiration from their music, especially their arrangements, the riffs and chords in particular. I also love the way their lyrics are often very matter of fact and tongue in cheek, carrying off a humour into their music, which I have often tried to emulate in my writing.

have a great time

Not only their music, but their stage presence, the matching outfits, the insane energy. In Don’t Wake The Neighbours, one of our main aims playing live is to just have a great time. I feel that if you’re having a good time, then the audience will respond in kind and that is something that The Hives champion. Pelle Almqvist (their lead singer) is a huge part of how I curate my stage presence and one of the reasons why I chose to find another guitarist rather than play guitar myself. I love the freedom it gives me to roam the stage, go off into the crowd, climb on things that I shouldn’t be climbing on, it gives me the chance to connect with the music and the audience so much more.

Thanks Jenny for the insight into The Hives and the impact on your own music.
