A CONFIDENT NEW CHAPTER
Wolf Alice’s The Clearing emerges, displaying a confident new chapter in the bands evolution. It is their fourth studio album, recorded in LA under the watchful eye of Greg Kurstin, a producer whose résumé stretches from Adele and Paul McCartney to Foo Fighters and Beck.
The grit and ferocity that once defined the band has evolved into something more expansive. The Clearing presents carefully arranged pieces that feel assured and exploratory. The opening track Thorns arrives like a velvet curtain call: dramatic and purposeful, a Beatles-style rush that sets the tone. Ellie Rowsell delivers with charm, drawing the listener into a record of confidence and curiosity.
Joff Oddie’s guitar is a constant presence; be it through lighter hues or darker crunches. Theo Ellis brings weight and groove, anchoring songs without overpowering them. Joel Amey’s drums are crisp and fluid, lifting the dynamics with precision. Together, they create a sound tighter and more atmospheric than ever before.
TEXTURES AND TOUCHSTONES
Where earlier albums peeled back layers, The Clearing is full of differing moods and textures. Bloom Baby Bloom rekindles the band’s energy with a loud-quiet-loud structure that balances tension and release. Rowsell’s vocal glides with Donna Summer style sensuality . It is rich and commanding, yet feather-light, giving the track an irresistible feel.
Leaning Against The Wall drifts into dream-pop, evoking the gauzy atmospherics of Cocteau Twins. Bread Butter Tea Sugar lifts into a luminous groove touched with ELO’s melodic sparkle, harmonies and arrangement glowing with orchestral pop grandeur.
Play It Out sits at the heart of the record, a quiet piano-led piece recalling the stark beauty of early PJ Harvey. Safe In The World builds with anthemic energy and a soaring chorus that feels destined to be a huge moment when performed live. White Horses introduces an added layer of shared vocals, with drummer Joel Amey taking the lead before joining Rowsell in a harmonious duet, adding to the track’s emotional depth.
SPACE TO GROW
On the whole, Wolf Alice’s fourth LP feels like an expansion of their world. The band emerge as architects of atmosphere, This is a record of wide horizons, inviting the listener to wander, reflect, and return to uncover new details.
Rather than burn fast and fierce, The Clearing is spacious. The feral spirit of Wolf Alice has matured, and in that maturity lies a different kind of power. It captures the band at their most assured. The best bands evolve over time, and Wolf Alice’s trajectory carries echoes of the Arctic Monkeys, growing bolder, more expansive, and fully in control of their artistic path. This is a bold, beautiful album that confirms their place among the most vital bands of their generation.
