Yorkshire based Katie Spencer shares her new video exclusively on At The Barrier, ahead of the release of her new album.
IT WAS THEN THAT I KNEW LOVE
Katie Spencer is no stranger to our pages here at At The Barrier. We’ve caught her live several times over the last few years. Now, we get the chance to share the video to Katie’s brand new single, It Was Then That I Knew Love.
It Was Then That I Knew Love showcases the raw emotion of Katie’s evocative vocals atop beautiful guitar. Giacomo Smith adds beautiful flourishes on the clarinet as Tom Mason grounds things with subtle double bass work.
Spencer has a knack for pulling at the heart strings with her style, and this new single continues that form. It is hypnotic with the way she phrases lyrics alongside the melodies. Her vocals lilt wonderfully alongside the music as she picks her guitar in her own inimitable style. The emotional heft and depth is tremendous.
As an adopted person, I wanted to write a song to express my huge gratitude towards those who took care of me as a child and who gave me the life I have now. I am infinitely fascinated by the myriads of decisions, circumstances and different paths that life reveals to us, and how each impulse and reaction to these has the potential to change the course of our futures. Although I have written many songs on the subject of adoption before, this one is perhaps the most lyrically-direct to-date. It is the first time I am sharing this part of myself and my family in this way; it feels like the right time and the song sits safely within the record, where I explore the depth and profoundness of love.

WHAT LOVE IS
What Love Is will be released on Friday 3rd October. Come Back & Find Me was premiered earlier in 2025. Cold Stone and the albums title track have also been released into the world. All three singles show a different musical side to Spencer’s canon.
Cold Stone in particular is a wonderful piece that is dreamy and ethereal. The harmonic guitar has an Eno style quality and more subtle clarinet gives a jazzy flavour.
Katie Spencer will launch What Love Is with a show at St Pancras Old Church in London. The album is available to pre-order now, here. All Katie’s other tour dates are here.
