THE EXCITEMENT BUILDS…
It’s just a few weeks since Outcome, the sophomore single to preview Make That Sound, the forthcoming album from Kansas City indie-roots-rock outfit Katy & The Drive got us all-of-a-shiver. Back then, in late August, we signaled our excitement at the prospect of the forthcoming album and suggested that anyone with an ear for powerful, gritty, melodic rock should keep an eye – and that ear – out for what Katy Guillen & The Drive are up to.
To recap: Katy Guillen & The Drive are: Katy Guillen (vocals and guitar) and life-partner Stephanie Williams (drums). They came together in 2018 and their debut album, Another One Gained, was released in 2022. The band prides itself in fostering empowered spaces for women in music – both onstage and off. Their performances showcase the group’s signature all-female powerhouse formation, technical prowess and chemistry.
SENSE OF CONTENTMENT
Make That Sound is scheduled to be with us on 17th October and the power, the passion and the musicianship on show in the tasters that we’ve heard to-date indicate that the album is going to be something a bit special. New single, Goodbye Charlie does nothing to disperse that expectation.
There’s a 50s feel to Goodbye Charlie. Katy’s vocals are way up front in the mix, and there’s a clear, Lucinda Williams, tone to her voice. The guitars are sharp and punchy and bass and drums stick to a solid rhythm throughout, even whilst the guitars indulge, briefly, in a tasty snatch of space exploration. Goodbye Charlie is a song of parting, but there’s a happy, dreamy, feel to it, especially whenever Katy song’s the song’s “I’m getting there” refrain. And there’s a sense of contentment in her lyrics, and in the way she delivers them.
IT’S GOING TO BE A GOOD AUTUMN…
2025 is passing quickly. Summer is coming to its close and 17th October is just around the corner. And Katy Guillen & The Drive have a message for us all: It’s going to be a good autumn – Make That Sound will take care of things…
