A Rock’n’roll afternoon in Highgate

The return of Liam Grundy at The Boogaloo in Highgate was also the official launch of his third solo album Chorlton. Named after the town he grew up in, the artwork features a drawing by a young Liam inspired by the western culture that every male kid from his generation was inspired by. Featuring only originals penned by Liam, Chorlton is certainly his most ambitious LP.

Accompanied by his long serving trio of Preben Raunsjberg on guitar, Richard Sadler on bass and Neil Bullock on drums (wonderful musicians, terrible people Liam joked), Liam aired most of Chorlton mixed with a generous helping of Rock’n’roll standards  and a sprinkling of earlier Grundy originals that got the whole Boogaloo audience grooving.

The catchy Every Time It Rains deserves it position as the opening track on the album, a catchy song that cries for radio airplay ! The Honkytonk vibe of Beer In The Morning channels later day Mickey Jupp (two Jupp originals the excellent Boxes and Tins and Don’t Talk To Me were covered by the band). This Is The Whiskey Talking sees him stray a bit from the roots rock vibe that the rest of the album displays, a 4 mins doom laden narrative closed off by a great guitar solo !

DECEPTIVE BENDS

The glorious What Can I Say could have been taken from 10CC’s Deceptive Bends while the rollicking Love At The Twisted Wheel fitted nicely in the midst of Rock’n’roll standards such as Guitar Man and Cherokee Boogie. The reflective Girl In Tennessee provided a more wistful note but the pace picked up again on the stomping Play It Loud, an anthemic rocker with another great chorus.

A step above  from his two previous efforts Richmond and Houston, Chorlton is a record of great depth with fantastic musicianship. It’s available on most streaming sites but it is recommended of course to buy it directly from Liam. It’s available on CD as well as Vinyl ( with some superb artwork).
