Matt Palka – Oh Angela: Single Review

First single from singer-songwriter Matt Palka’s forthcoming album/audio book project, Moment in Time. Oh Angela is a love letter to the courage it takes to protect what matters most.

STORY OF A ROAD TRIP

Ohio-raised and California-based, Matt Palka is an explorer and a singer-songwriter. This coming June, he’ll be releasing an album/audio book combo – Moment in Time – that tells, and soundtracks , Matt’s recent adventure, when he cycled, camped and busked his way along and across some of America’s highest and most remote routes and highways. Matt’s journey took five weeks and he travelled over 2,000 miles before he ran out of water and came head-to-head with a bull one early morning. But, despite these tribulations and the exhaustion that inevitably accompanied them, Matt’s travels brought him within reach of the soulmate that he’d been seeking. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Trouble is, we’re going to have to wait until June before we hear the full story…

Oh Angela is the forthcoming album’s lead single. It’s a love letter to the courage it takes to protect what matters most and, and as the single’s charming video clearly emphasises, what matters most is those we love and the memories that we share with them.

OH ANGELA

And that’s a message that comes across loudly and clearly in the song’s chorus, too, as with words like: “Don’t ever let me bring you down. Just think of the people left in the world – be proud. Let them say we’ve got stars in our eyes – those too scared to dream just criticise,” Matt explains just how that courage can be exercised. It’s an easy-going song with soft, intimate verses and a big-sounding chorus. Chimes of Pedal steel pervade the song and mesh nicely with Matt’s acoustic guitar and the band are beautifully tight. Matt sings with sincerity and, as he reaches for the octave notes (which he does quite a lot, during the song) I’m reminded of Warren Zevon.

Oh Angela is a fine, refreshing first taste of what Matt Palka has in store for us. I’m sure that there’ll be more appetisers to come and I, for one, am already looking forward to Moment in Time.
