Acclaimed Canadian singer-songwriter Abigail Lapell returns with a new single. Hazel is the first taster of Abigail’s forthcoming album, Shadow Child and celebrates a mother’s love for her -as yet – unborn child.
THERE’S A SHADOW CHILD COMING...
Acclaimed Canadian singer, songwriter and song stylist Abigail Lapell is becoming a major At The Barrier presence. And, each time we’re offered something of hers to contemplate, it seems that she’s taken another huge step forward. We’ve been tracking Abigail’s work for a few years now and, every time we hear her music, we’re charmed – all over again.
Back in May 2025, we were moved to declare that her 2025 album, Anniversary & More Songs About Love, had intensified the already strong state of enchantment that she generates. So we’re delighted that, very soon, there’ll be another Abigail Lapell album to drool over. Yes, folks – Abigail has a new album in the pipeline. Shadow Child will be a nine-song collection with each song inspired by her experience of carrying her first child – one song for each month of her gestation. Let’s start the countdown – Shadow Child will be with us on 8th May – and we can’t hardly wait!
A GENTLE LOVE LETTER TO AN UNBORN FUTURE CHILD
It’s time to prepare for landing and, to get that period of preparation underway, Abigail has released the album’s lead single. That single, Hazel, is a gentle love letter to an unborn future child – or one that may never be (Abigail didn’t want to push providence too far…). I’ll say it upfront: Hazel is a winner; just about as mellow and ethereal as it’s possible to get.
Featuring the soft, distinctive voice of fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Jill Barber, Hazel opens to the sound of a gently-plucked acoustic guitar, underpinned by deep, rich bass. Abigail’s stunning vocals are, to anyone that’s had the pleasure, a given feature of any of her songs but they’re taken to a new dimension by Jill’s harmonies. Abigail’s lyrics: “With hazel in your eyes, silver in your hair and the echo of your name on the sweet, sweet summer air” express the love that she has in store for her unborn child. And you can feel that love, expressed in Abigail’s every utterance.
And, after a few absorbing listens to Hazel, all I can say is: If this is a taste of what’s to come – bring it on!
