Hannah Scott – In Your Light: Single Review

Suffolk-born, South London-based folk artist Hannah Scott has a new EP on the way. Threads will be with us in June but, in the meantime, Hannah has sent us all a little earworm to keep us happy. Her single, In Your Light is an enticing taster of what’s to come…

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME…

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard from our old friend Hannah Scott. We first discovered the Suffolk-born, South London-based contemporary folk artist when her EP, Ancient Lights, tipped our scales, back in 2023. And the deal was well-and-truly sealed in 2024, when we were stunned by Hannah’s album, Absence Of Doubt.

So, we’re SO happy to announce that Hannah has a new EP in the pipeline. It’ll be called Threads, and it’ll be with us by mid-June and, to get that particular show on the road, Hannah has decided to tease us with a little taster. New single, in Your Light, was written as a present for Hannah’s mother’s 50th birthday, 15 years ago (Hannah couldn’t afford to buy her mother a prezzie, so she wrote one for instead…) Actually, I’ll bet that her mother was thrilled to bits, because it’s a wonderful song; tender, poignant, melodic – and beautifully sung. Better than a box of Liquorice Allsorts any day of the week!

A BONA-FIDE EARWORM

Gently-strummed guitar and the clear tones of Hannah’s voice emphasise the intimacy in lines like: “Coz we’re just so alike to anything other than mother and daughter.” The subtle strings add real warmth and Hannah’s band – bass, piano and drums – add the depth. The lasting impression is one of comfort, contentment and sincerity, especially when Hannah delivers her payoff line: “And I hope you’re proud.”

Hannah’s mother is, herself, an artist. She was, surely, moved by lyrics like: “With grace and thought and faith, you taught me to create.” Proud? Of course she was proud! And, you know what’s best of all? In Your Light is a sure-fire, bona-fide earworm!
