Masked Portuguese outfit Gaerea take more evolutionary steps in their sonic journey bringing forth an intense, immersive and melodic album in Loss.
GAEREA
The new studio album by the anonymous Portuguese masked band Gaerea, feels like a big step forward. Compared to their previous record, Coma, Loss is more personal, more intense, and at times surprisingly melodic. Coma had its brighter, more experimental moments, even clean vocals here and there, but Loss goes deeper, exploring pain and emotion with a focus that feels almost intimate while still keeping the band’s signature darkness.
Opening track, Luminary, sets an immediate tone. Drums hit like a jackhammer, guitars sweep in waves of melody, and the vocals are more melodic than one might expect; catchy without losing the band’s post-black metal edge. The chorus is the kind that sticks in your head and, judging by the energy of the song, will probably get the crowd singing along at shows. The synths add a cinematic layer, swelling like strings, giving the track an airy, expansive feel.
DARK IMMERSION
Submerged continues in a darker, more immersive vein. I was lucky enough to hear this one live back in November 2025 in Glasgow, when Gaerea opened for Orbit Culture. Along with Hellbound, it already had that weighty emotional punch even before the album existed. On record, it’s even more hypnotic as the guitars stretch out, the synths float above like water, with the rhythm section anchoring everything. There’s a constant feeling that the songs are drifting, almost submerged in a fluid, watery atmosphere that runs through the whole album.
Hellbound itself hits hard, balancing sheer intensity with moments of space where the synths and guitars can breathe. It’s dynamic, emotional, and one of the tracks that really shows how well the band has turned their live energy into studio power. The continuity of the synths and guitar effects across the album is striking; they create this cohesive, underwater like soundscape that makes the record feel like one long, immersive journey.
The middle of the album gives us Phoenix, a track that carries serious emotional weight. It’s about resilience, surviving betrayal, and transforming that pain into something powerful. Gaerea manage to make the intensity cathartic rather than exhausting. Cyclone opens with one of the album’s most surprising moments: the vocals are melodic, even a little pop-like, before the track plunges back into crushing heaviness. It’s unexpected but somehow perfect, showing how the band is stretching what post-black metal can do.

HUMANITY & VULNERABILITY
Nomad is another highlight. Its chorus is immediately memorable and will likely pull the crowd into singing along live, Again, something pretty unusual for a black metal band. The song drifts between reflection and intensity, combining the melodic accessibility hinted at throughout the record with Gaerea’s usual emotional darkness. Even in their heaviest moments, the band never loses that sense of humanity and vulnerability.
Stardust closes the album; an expansive track that builds slowly, layering synths and guitars into a powerful, cinematic climax. It leaves you with a sense of melancholy. However, it helps release an emotional exhale after the tension of the previous tracks.
The artwork is also worth a note. Created by Kaiwan Shaban, it shows a solitary figure floating before a glowing portal reflected on dark water. It perfectly mirrors the album’s themes: isolation, emotional struggle, and subtle moments of transcendence. The watery visuals even echo the album’s ‘underwater’ sound, where guitars and synths give everything a fluid, drifting quality.
STANDOUT CHORUSES
Tracks like Luminary and Nomad really stand out for their choruses; they’re catchy, melodic, and already feel like live anthems. Hearing them makes you wonder what’s next for the band. Is Loss just the start of a new, slightly lighter direction? Will Gaerea keep blending melody with darkness, or are we seeing the first steps towards something even more accessible?
Only time will tell, but whatever happens, it feels like the beginning of a new chapter for the band. Loss is an intense, immersive, and surprisingly melodic record. It keeps the essence of Gaerea’s black metal roots while pushing into new emotional and musical territory. This album it’s certainly an evolution that lets us guess what the next step could be
