Profanation – Ultra-Noise Warfare: Album Review

Violent, unpredictable and utterly corrosive, Profanation weaponise grindcore’s past, dragging it into darker territory and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

PROFANATION

While French outfit Profanation may be newcomers to the extreme music underground the band members behind the band are anything but. The debut EP featured guitarist Kev Desecrator (Deströyer 666, Venefixion) though he departed following its recording and was replaced with Stef Aertsen who also handles lead vocals. Completing the line-up are vocalist/bassist Profane Alex, also of Venefixion, alongside Sinistre on drums and Judge on guitar, as notably the latter is also in post-black metal nihilists Regarde les Homme Tomber. Sinistre has likewise performed live with Regarde les Homme Tomber making Profanation’s ranks a particularly eclectic gathering of underground talent.

ULTRA-NOISE WARFARE

That eclectic streak was already evident on the aptly titled Skull Crushing Violence EP, released in 2023, which attracted enough attention for Iron Bonehead Productions to grant it a physical release. Like many of France’s most adventurous extreme acts, Profanation resist an overall categorisation. Deathgrind forms the foundation, but it is fractured schizoid genre-hopping, flashes of blackened hostility and moments of avant-garde extremity. While the EP occasionally felt like a band honing its identity, the debut full length realises that promise in spectacular fashion. The band excels at balancing unrestrained violence with experimental ambition, resulting in an album is as diverse as it is devastating.

SERVILE ROT

While the album’s feral intensity feels contemporary, its DNA lies firmly within grindcore too. Opener Servile Rot launches with a cacophonous blast of old-school grind reminiscent of Terrorizer, albeit filtered through a modern lens of dissonance and unpredictability. Army Of Dogs somehow escalates the violence further, blending pulverising math-inflected riffing that strays into powerviolence. Across the album, the riffcraft is exceptional, balancing razor-sharp aggression with massive grooves and occasional Slayer-esque whammy bar screeches. With the vocals swinging between guttural growls and caustic screams, Nosebleed Razor completes a headlong rush towards total sonic annihilation.

REALM OF THE ABSOLUTE

The album’s restless approach to dynamics comes into sharper focus on Realm Of The Absolute, which slows the pace without sacrificing any of its corrosive edge. Hints of sludge-like menace simmer as an undercurrent before the song erupts back into explosive grindcore excess, showcasing the band’s remarkable command of tempo shifts. The title track follows with a gunfire sample and a Repulsion-inspired crust riff, locking into a crushing groove while constantly mutating through successive riff changes. The constantly morphing dynamics add to the intensity, inserting multiple riff changes alongside the barbaric vocal performance which is hideous and borders on the war metal style perpetrated by the likes of Canada’s Revenge and Conqueror into the sadistic nihilism of bands like Blasphemy or Archgoat.

WORLD OF PAIN

The brief noise interlude Vermin provides a moment of industrial unease before Total Stomp delivers one of the album’s most unexpected turns. Built around a slower, repetitive riff and tortured vocal performance, it skirts the fringes of sludge while retaining the band’s abrasive extremity. The production remains deliberately harsh, balancing clarity with a treble-heavy assault that amplifies the discomfort. World Of Pain restores to Terrorizer-inspired mayhem, unleashing torrents of blasting chaos, while the five-minute closer Anti proves just as punishing despite its greater scope. Blackened riffs, echo-laden vocals, bass breaks and explosive shifts between slower passages and frantic blast beats showcase Profanation’s gift for dynamic songwriting, culminating in a distorted, noise-drenched finale that brings the album to a fittingly violent end.
