Sheffield rock and rollers Meridian release their second single, Walks On Sunshine/Sinking.

MERIDIAN

The quartet from Sheffield formed meeting at university, all sharing the same passion to start a band. Since then, the boys have sold out venues such as The Washington and The Sidney & Matilda and released their debut single Down By The Waterline this March.

WALKS ON SUNSHINE / SINKING

An ode to mid 60s psychedelia, Walks On Sunshine is full of happy electric guitar with deep bass mixed in. Slurring vocals sit upon it discussing emotion and balance in daily life. The chorus sings: “He walks on sunshine, but lives without his sight / So he can’t see, his broken soul inside / As I look at him dead in the eyes, / All I see is the cold outside. ” It questions peoples deeper feelings, whether they are happy in this society or are we all drained from the world around us. The poignant lyrics are blanketed by the optimistic sound full of edgy electric guitar and bright organ sounds.

The transition into Sinking is beyond effortless. Continuing the electric guitar but grittier, a slightly more somber tone takes over. The electric guitar is the glue for this track, it’s prominent throughout the track as well as an organ that fills the gaps. Lyrically, it discusses themes of panic, relationships and the fear of losing someone you’ve only just met. The chorus sings: “Cause we’ve got to keep our heads above the sand, / Don’t move away now just take my hand”. It ties nicely into Walks On Sunshine as it keeps the running theme of uncertainty in daily life.

The middle of the song is broken up by a spoken poem which conveys the feelings of the song to give it a renewed meaning in the current context of Britain and encapsulates a feeling that you can make a fuss when things aren’t right. The music quietens but is still there, always lurking like the uncertainty in life always is. The organ becomes more eminent until the electric guitar builds to take over.

As Sinking ends, the rock and roll sound dies down making way for gentle guitar strumming. The lyrics turn towards a positive light, discussing freedom through the eyes of a blue bird. It’s a polar opposite to the singles hostile opening discussing the negativity of day to day life.

Meridian want to stand out. Meridian want to be original. They wont stop till they are heard loud and clear.
