It is warming to see The Five Points Gang found an audience they deserve. When At The Barrier saw them live a few years back (review here), there were marginally more artist members on stage that evening than in the audience! With that being said, this blues trio were gushing passion for their sound.
On the The Spirit Of Rock & Roll, Dinho Barral (Bass) and Joe Pearson (Guitar/Vocals), with Tobi Andersson (Drums), mainly glean material from their stunning album; Wanted (reviewed here), whilst blending in a few standards. There is a very strong arrangement of Crossroads, and a particularly raucous version of regular standard Hooch Coochie Man. All blues bands get round to having a go at the standards, but these renditions are particularly stunning.
The pulsating How Long and high tempo All In All, not only open the album Wanted, but also this set. The wild scorching guitar work, driving percussion and gritty vocals set the mood for their raw pounding blues and it never lets up to the final number All Points Bulletin. Tail Dragger and Love By The Gun are nestled in between further tracks
from Wanted, the latter slackens the rapid pace with calmer guitar licks but some nifty jazzed up bass runs.
Boogie Man is exactly what the title suggests; a stomping boogie blues with electric fast guitar solo with heavily punctured percussion. Their version of Crossroads maintains the simplicity of their delivery without compromising the interest of fans of this blues classic. All She Said again gives us some respite before Five Points Gang ramp it up again for the final set numbers.
Chills and Thrills represents what the whole live performance is ….Thrills with no subtle frills, just pure heavy rocking blues. It is raw around the edges, but The Spirit Of Rock & Roll captures Five Points Gang in incendiary form. Make sure you respond to the APB; Five Points Gang should be on your radar.
