Flamy Grant – S.P.R.K.L. : Single Review

North Carolinian drag queen, Flamy Grant kicks off Pride Month ’24 with a funky foretaste of her forthcoming album.

Release Date:  1st June 2024

Label: Self Release

Formats: Digital

Flamy Grant is, by her own description, a “Shame-slaying, hip-swaying, singing-songwriting drag queen from Asheville, North Carolina.”  She’s also an award-winning, Billboard-charting musical artist who has achieved the remarkable distinction of becoming the first drag performer to top the iTunes Christian Chart, with her 2022 debut album, Bible Belt Baby, a feat that was helped, undoubtedly, after a self-proclaimed MAGA preacher went online specifically to diss her.  The phrase: “She who laughs last, laughs longest” comes immediately – and gratifyingly – to mind….

Flamy’s songs blend folk, gospel and roots musical styles with her penchant for theatrical storytelling, and that blend is further enhanced by a hefty dose of 1970s ‘Philly’ soul on her new single, S.P.R.K.L., a song which also features Ricky Braddy as guest vocalist and which is released on Saturday 1st June – to celebrate the launch of Pride Month 2024.

Flamy Grant

Sharp and frighteningly funky, S.P.R.K.L. is a delight.  The bass is tight and bumpy, the drums are crisp and Flamy’s voice is tuneful and reassuringly confident.  The song’s production pays due attention to all the right details, whether these are the shimmering flourishes of keyboard or the discrete backing vocals, and – always – those vaunted gospel influences shine through brilliantly.  S.P.R.K.L. is well-worth a listen.

And don’t forget that album that Flamy is promising…  It’s going to be called CHURCH, it’ll hit the racks sometime in the autumn and, if S.P.R.K.L. is anything to go by, it’ll be a corker.
