BELGIAN BOY
Opening with atmospheric chanting from the band, the song transitions seamlessly into a soft and restrained first verse. The intro gives the illusion that the song will erupt right away, however the subversion in tone is effective at pulling the listener in deeper and keeping them on their toes. The song is wonderfully produced with what sounds like an almost shoegazey pad encompassing the mix, whilst the delicate guitar and drums dance underneath.
The chorus that follows brings the energy with a more unrestrained vocal performance from front man Sascha Vansant. This sound follows through into the next verse in the track which ramps up the intensity.
As the song reaches its final minute, the band are able to let loose. The drums hit harder with quick, skippy fills and the vocals are rougher. This creates an infectious spirit that is hard to ignore. The track ending with a return to the more low-key sound it kicked off with is an effective full circle moment that works well.
The track is enticing and alluring, leaving the listener to wonder what the rest of the album has to offer. It’s a song that will certainly stick with the listener.
