News of the debut solo release from Eugene S. Robinson.
Re-imagining the ageless American classics, the founding member of Oxbow, Bunuel and Whipping Boy is happy to shares his debut solo-single, I’ve Gotta Be Me – available now via Ako-Lite Records.

For Eugene S. Robinson, performance art provocateur and Renaissance man, best known as the voice and force behind Oxbow and Whipping Boy, his latest era is nothing short of a wholesale rebirth—a second coming of fire, wit, and reverie.
Following the disintegration of his longtime outfit, Oxbow, Robinson, now residing in Spain, has set his sights on new frontiers. In the prolific artist’s latest incarnation, he is a revered literary figure with a rabid Substack following, lead singer of international metal act Bunuel, and now a sublime interpreter of the Great American Songbook.
Produced by Ako-Lite label head John Getze (Jim Jones All Stars, STAHV), I’ve Gotta Be Me”is the lead single from Eugene Sings!, a full-length collection of reimagined standards featuring Robinson’s unmistakable, iconic yowl in service to timeless classics.
“If you were blood-related to me, you’ve been hearing me sing some of these songs forever. If you’re not blood-related to me, you get to hear me sing them now,” explains Robinson. “With not even the slightest bit of irony, I can tell you that I sing them because I love them. And to find a label that wanted me to give voice to them? Perfection. Feast your feels.”
Mixed and mastered by Solomon Arye Rosenschein at Casa de Lucca with a string arrangement provided by Stevie Blacke (Beck, Olivia Rodrigo, the Sammy Davis Jr. classic is both a declaration and an invitation: a reminder that individuality remains a radical act, and that legendary material lives forever when fearless artists breathe new life into it.
I’ve Gotta Be Me is available on all major streaming platforms via Ako-Lite Records, with Eugene Sings! arriving in 2026. Pre-order via Bandcamp here.
