Robertson – Birdy In The Window: Single Review

It runs in the family! Aberdeen guitarist/singer/composer Kevin Robertson took At The Barrier by storm last summer with his album, Yellow Painted Moon. Now the Robertson family are back in force, with Birdy in the Window – another slice of warm, jangly pop written and sung by Kevin’s son, Scott

EMBEDDED IN THE FAMILY DNA

Aberdeen guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Kevin Robertson caught our attention in dramatic fashion last July when he exploded into our consciousness with his 5th album, Yellow Painted Moon. The album, a kaleidoscope of jangly Californian, Byrds-flavoured psychedelia, became one of our summer soundtracks and – no surprises here – was a shoo-in when we came to compile our Albums of the Year listings.

We had a feeling back in July that a passion for well-structured jangly pop was embedded in the Robertson family DNA – Kevin’s son Scott was gainfully employed on Yellow Painted Moon, playing bass, guitars and backing vocals. And, now, it seems, Kevin and Scott have decided that it’s time for Scott to take a step even closer to the limelight. Credited to Robertson, Birdy In The Window is another three minutes of magic from the Granite City. The song is a Scott Robertson composition and he sings lead vocals and plays guitar. Dad Kevin helps out on guitars and backing vocals and the lineup is completed by producer Nick Bertling who adds drums and keyboards.

A FIRST MORSEL OF WHAT’S TO COME

The jangly guitars are out in force and, like Kevin’s songs on Yellow Painted Moon, there’s a definite 60s influence at work. Scott’s vocals are soft, melodic and intimate and Nick’s production is rich and full. Birdy In The Window is a satisfying song and the really good news is that there’s more to come… The father/son pairing have an album – Robertson – in the offing and Birdy In The Window is our first taster of what they have in store. On the evidence of this first morsel, I reckon that it’s safe to expect another special offering from this particular family stable.
