Spirit Adrift – Infinite Illumination: Album Review

Good News: The Alchemical sonic melting pot, collectively known as Spirit Adrift, has released their new album!

Bad News: Infinite Illumination will be their sixth and final album.

A PROFOUND IMPACT

When Nate Garrett formed Spirit Adrift, few could have predicted the profound impact this project would have on modern doom metal. What began as a cathartic outlet during a period of personal turmoil evolved into one of the genre’s most respected and emotionally resonant acts. Over the course of a decade, Spirit Adrift released a string of critically acclaimed albums that bridged the gap between classic heavy metal and soul-crushing doom, earning them a devoted following and establishing Garrett as one of the genre’s most compelling voices.

The strength of Spirit Adrift has always been Garrett’s ability to infuse doom metal with genuine emotional depth and vulnerability. Where many bands in the genre focus solely on crushing heaviness, Spirit Adrift paired that weight with introspective lyrics that explored themes of struggle, redemption, and the human condition. This emotional authenticity resonated deeply with fans who found solace in music that acknowledged darkness while offering a pathway through it. Garrett’s background as a drummer for acts like Gatecreeper and Take Over and Destroy informed his songwriting, bringing a rhythmic precision and dynamic sensibility that elevated Spirit Adrift beyond typical doom conventions.

A MASTERCLASS IN EVOLUTION

The band’s discography reads like a masterclass in evolution. From the raw, stripped-down approach of their 2016 debut Chained to Oblivion, through the towering riffs of 2017’s Curse of Conception, to the more refined and expansive soundscapes of 2019’s Divided by Darkness and 2020’s Enlightened in Eternity, Spirit Adrift consistently pushed boundaries while maintaining an unwavering commitment to authentic, emotionally charged heavy music. Each release saw Garrett refining his craft, incorporating elements of classic metal, progressive rock, and traditional doom into a sound that felt both timeless and distinctly modern.

Throughout their career, Spirit Adrift carved out a unique space in the doom metal landscape. While contemporaries often leaned heavily into either stoner rock grooves or funeral doom’s glacial pace, Spirit Adrift found a middle path that incorporated elements of traditional heavy metal, progressive rock, and classic doom without sacrificing the genre’s essential heaviness. This approach earned them praise from critics and opened doors to tours with diverse acts, from doom purists to melodic metal bands, demonstrating the universal appeal of their sound. Their influence is clear in a new generation of doom bands who similarly embrace melody and emotional honesty, alongside crushing riffs.

INFINITE ILLUSION

This makes the announcement that Infinite Illusion would be the band’s final album all the more poignant. Yet rather than feeling like a premature ending, this final statement stands as a powerful culmination of everything Spirit Adrift has represented over the past decade.

Although there is a tinge of sadness knowing this is the last time the band are putting down any audio, the album weaves in with delicate acoustic passages on the title track Infinite Illusion. It then leans into a drifting instrumental which if it had continued at that point, I wouldn’t’ve have complained. Then, that familiar drop in tone and vocal appearance appears and there really isn’t time to reflect on the discography before because all that matters is the moment.

It doesn’t take long before the listener heads to the album’s crowning glory. Window Within is laden with just the purest of doom, the Sabbath structures as well as interlaced solos are fully out in the open. It’s that type of track you can feel in your bones, whilst your head doesn’t stop moving โ€“ this may be one of three shorter tracks on the album but it is no less impactful.

YOU WILL NEVER HOLD THE KEY

Track length is important here as You Will Never Hold The Key feels like it has a story to tell, its narrative outpouring is quintessentially everything I love about Spirit Adrift. Nate Garrett’s massive success with Neon Nightmare last year, especially in the context of the personal hardships, feel particularly poignant. This is followed up with Born In A Bad Way which is undeniably one of those tracks that will stay with you long after the music has stopped.

As Infinite Illusion progresses, the continuing feelings of rapture are doing little to fade. Buried In The Shadow Of The Cross, again, is so well put together and paired with shades of early Death, with the guitar parts in particular on White Death, is something to behold. I mentioned crowning glories earlier, but look, this band, this album is absolutely allowed to have more than one right?

I Am Sustained is slow and purposeful with menacing undertones that are impossible to shake off, with the final track Where Once There Was An Ocean, being almost a piece of everything that has followed before on Divided by Darkness & Ghost at the Gallows, to name but a few.

CRUSHING, UPLIFTING, TRANSCENDENT…

With the last note chiming through the speakers, I am left to ponder that, will there be a chance for fans to give the band the send-off they not only deserve, but over the last decade, have absolutely earned? I suppose it is a real wait-and-see momentโ€ฆ

As Spirit Adrift’s story concludes, their catalogue stands as a monument to persistence, evolution, and the healing power of heavy music. From the desperate rawness of Chained to Oblivion to the triumphant might of their final work, Garrett and company demonstrate that doom metal could be both crushing and uplifting, traditional and progressive, heavy and transcendent.

Ten years of transforming personal adversity into universal anthems, proving that the heaviest music can carry the most hopeful messages. In a genre often defined by its relationship with darkness, Spirit Adrift choose to be defined by its journey through it.

A Final Testament to a Decade of Uncompromising Doom.
