SETH LAKEMAN ANNOUNCES FREEDOM FIELDS ONLINE CONCERT FOR 15TH ANNIVERSARY
Here’s news of an online gig from Seth Lakeman and his band in celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of the release of Freedom Fields
It all takes place on Saturday 27th February 2021. Tickets are available here and there’s also a table full of new merch here with some smart designs around the Freedom Fields album
Freedom Fields is one of the best-selling Folk albums in the UK as well as receiving the accolade of Album Of The Year at the 2007 Folk Awards. Seth was also named Folk Singer Of The Year at the same ceremony after being previously nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for Kitty Jay. An event that catapulted Lakeman into the forefront of the new British folk movement

“I’m really excited to be able to share the whole Freedom Fields album for its 15th anniversary! It’s a collection of songs hugely inspired by the West Country and it still seems to be the most popular album I’ve recorded so far. This is going to be pretty special. I hope you can tune in to watch!” says Seth.
From a personal viewpoint, it’s been fifteen years since my first connection with Seth Lakeman, having heard Setting Of The Sun on the 2006 Folk Awards album. He was touring as support to Billy Bragg and we managed to catch the show at The Bridgewater Hall in 2006. Funnily enough, we also ran into him at the same venue and had a lengthy chat in the foyer at the Folk Awards in 2019.
I bought my copy of Freedom Fields there and then – the gatefold sleeve with the extra disc, not the reissued version that had some different mixes, a change in the running order and a different cover. It’s been a job for life; a long series of stalking Seth across tours, festivals, before and after shows and even bagging a freebie at the Q Music series at the Hard Rock Cafe in Manchester. Freedom Fields still provides many set pleasers: how excited were the Lakeman faithful (who once had their own Facebook group – The Mire) when 1643 finally appeared live after years of waiting/longing.
Starved of any Seth action – I missed his tour of the A Pilgrim’s Tale album – no local stop-offs…, the last time I saw him live was almost two years ago. Benji Kirkpatrick back in the band with the guitar slot and of course Seth is never more than six feet from Ben Nicholls. The teasers look like a couple of new faces so it should be fun. The prospect of Freedom Fields and the usual suspects, plus the rarely played gems, The Final Lot, The Band Of Gold, and the extended outro of The Riflemen Of War…the tastebuds are salivating.
