Nieve Ella – Lifetime of Wanting: EP Review

Nieve Ella makes a powerful comeback with her incredible second EP, ‘Lifetime of Wanting’.  Maddy Harries reviews.

Released: 1st September 2023

Label: AWAL

Format: Vinyl / Digital

Singer-songwriter Nieve Ella’s keenly awaited sophomore EP ‘Lifetime of Wanting’ is an incredible collection of Indie-Pop tracks. It represents a brand-new mindset following that of her debut EP, Young and Naive, released in January 2023. Succeeding this release, the Wolverhampton-born artist has captured the hearts of so many with her unbelievable talent.

In July, Ella made her Glastonbury debut on the BBC Introducing stage. She also delivered incredible sets at Reading and Leeds Festival last month. Nieve supported Inhaler in February and will join them again on their upcoming tour in Europe as well as two of their UK shows.

‘Lifetime of Wanting’ begins with the opening track ‘Big House’; released as a single prior to the EP. It is a definite fan favourite. It captures the unmatched feeling of pure unconditional love, and Nieve herself describes it as being “…about how much I love my boyfriend, and I want to live in this big house with him”. This upbeat, guitar-driven track is the perfect lively love song that represents the extreme bliss Nieve feels.

Another amazing track from the EP; ‘Car Park’; is about a relationship that is constantly in conflict, however the love they share is still valued above everything else. This song is full of enthusiastic drums which make the song’s melody perfectly upbeat and joyful, even if the lyrics do contrast this. Whilst the line “I want you to cry at my funeral” may seem morbid, it is really a desperate plea for the loved one to show how much they care. ‘Car Park’ is undoubtedly one of Nieve’s best produced songs, and a personal favourite from the EP.

The EP closes with the title track. It’s an emotional ballad that captures perfectly the situation where someone appears in your life right as you need them. Fans resonate with this song so heavily, and many are using the lyric “you’re everything I wanted” to describe Nieve and the comfort that her and her music bring them. The ‘Lifetime of Wanting’ lyrics: “Walked past that big white apartment, I know that one day, we’ll own it” perfectly complement the line from the EP’s first track ‘Big House’: “I wanna live in our big house, and follow you around for hours…”. The cyclical structure is the perfect way to close this phenomenal EP. We can only imagine what else Nieve Ella has in store for us next.
