What do they say about suffering for great art? Inspired by a break-up whilst the Windred-Wornes sisters -Ivy and Mabel – were on their extensive Charm Of Finches European tour in 2022, they describe the new single as: “A piece of self-advice, that ‘making a clean cut’ would be the best way to move forward”. It sees their award winning folk roots taking a turn into classy and elaborate songwriting and perfromance.

The Melbourne folk-pop duo’s new single, Clean Cut is a dark and bewitching track that combines enchanting strings, insistent drums, and the sisters’ exquisite harmonies in a bold statement of self-empowerment. The opening gambit isn’t dissimilar to Fleetwood Mac’s Rhiannion given an injection of adrenalin, creating a dream-like, moody yet forceful atmosphere.

Dedicated to a DIY ethos, the duo self-directed the song’s mysterious and haunting video, that comlements the track really well, as well as designing and sewing all the costumes. Alongside a group of friends, they turned a Melbourne warehouse into a haunted dolls museum for the 24-hour long shoot, complete with perfectly synchronised marionette-like dance routine.

Clean Cut is the opening track from the duo’s fourth album Marlinchen In The Snow, produced by acclaimed Canadian producer Daniel Ledwell (Jenn Grant, The Once, Good Lovelies) in Nova Scotia during the depths of winter. Whilst many of the songs were written on Charm Of Finches’ European tour in 2022, and explore themes of travel, the meaning of home, belonging, and the fragility of relationships experienced from a distance, the Nova Scotia setting, surrounded by woods, snow, and with a frozen lake on their doorstep, imprinted on the album a haunting beauty of deep winter, further woven into the album by the references to gothic folklore and mythology brought to mind by the fairy-tale landscape.

Marlinchen In The Snow,  is due on 19th April, released via Spunk Records in Australia and New Zealand and independent for ROW. Pre-order the album here
