Born into the blues and born for the blues as son of legendary Lonnie Brooks blues is literally in Ronnie’s DNA. The way he performs on this album, it oozes from every pore, muscle and bone.
Initially recording on his own label, he has already established himself amongst the best. “I just play what I feel,” he says. “It’s all from the heart.” Albert Collins, B.B. King, Willie Dixon, Koko Taylor have also contributed to his blues education and does it show!
He must have an incredibly big heart as this is Chicago blues at its best. Funky, rocky, mournful, tuneful with all the shades of blues possible. “I’m blessed to have played with and learned from the best. I’m carrying them within me,” he says, so you can add broad shoulders to his huge heart because he has taken it all on board.
These soulful collection of self penned songs shows that Ronnie has developed his own brand of blues which stands up against all his mentors. Blues In My DNA may in essence seem to offer conventional guitar focused blues but he has his own unique style vocally and instrumentally . He can deliver pulsating rock numbers like the opening track I’m Feeling You, he can be mournful yearning balladeer on Accept My Love and majestic guitar solos crowd-pleasing, searing guitar-driven Stuck On Stupid. In the title track Blues In My DNA he truly bares his soul has intricate guitar fills in between his honest open hearted vocals.
All through his life his mentors encouraged him not to copy but learn from the masters. He listened , his lyrics are convincing and compelling !!! All his soul searching doggedness has earned him a place amongst his heroes; his music is ferocious and inventive.
