Essex, Drugs and Rock and Roll is the electrifying follow-up from the Essex trio’s 2023 debut album. Bilk introduces us to their new era of work, blending hints of punk, rap, grime, indie, and rock. Lead singer Sol Abrahams described the album as feeling like “a natural progression.”
The Essex-based trio kick off the album with the high-energy RNR. Bilk certainly make quite the impression, with a strong bass intro, and bold vocals from Sol Abrahams. Just when you think the track was energetic enough, the build-up to the final chorus gets you moving.
‘So say what you say, I’m a rock ‘n’ roll star today’
Summer Days offers a change of pace, showcasing the band’s more reflective side. Here the band showcases their lyricism, showing a more vulnerable and introspective side to listeners. Comparable to Arctic Monkeys and fellow Essex musician Damon Albarn’s solo music. The vocals particularly stand out in this song. The track’s upbeat vibe is perfect for a summer drive with the windows down, and Abrahams’ vocals shine here particularly.

F UP
F Up is an anthem for embracing imperfections and living life on the edge. Once again, the powerful electric guitar takes the limelight, leading into an explosive guitar solo that ties the track together along with the drums.
“But I’m fine, ’cause I’m a fuck up till the day that I die.”
This Room Is Caving In On Me opens with Luke Hare on bass, followed by punchy and prominent drumming by Harry Gray. This track stands out on the album as it blends influences of indie rock and punk, and even features Abrahams’ rapping, showing the band’s versatility.
Bilk concludes their eccentric debut album with the track Band Life Blues. It makes you want to listen all over again. The track marks the end of the album as well as
Essex, Drugs and Rock and Roll effortlessly weaves into different genres and creates a great listen. The instrumentals bring the energy, while the lyrics explore everything from vulnerability to carefree rebellion.
Bilk will be touring the UK on their biggest UK tour to promote the album later this year. Bilk were born to be on the stage after successfully performing at festivals such as Boardmasters, Reading/Leeds, and Y Not. You can view their tour dates here.
