AN IDEAL FOR LIVING
Before The Dawn Of Time – an album that asks “What are the important things in life? What can we do as fellow humans to make it a better place?” The Swedes of Gin Lady deliver their verdict with a batch of soulful 60s and 70s influenced grooves. Chilled out harmonies and a relaxed presence see them deal with issues of failures to communicate, the way we treat our environment and the way nature reacts when provoked by us.
It’s a perfect soundtrack to accompany the idealistic thoughts that the band espouse: “the fact that love, trust in one another and hope is the only true way out of this mess and that the distance grows between our stars and galaxies. If only…. But if not, there’s always music and the eleven tracks fuse American roots rock with a shimmering warmth and organic tapestry of velvety grooves. Delicately crafted riffs and keys melting into dreamy and psychedelic tinged vocal melodies. Sounds idyllic and that’s the plan.
HEAVY…WITH HOPE
The subject matter may be heavy but becomes softened by clouds of hope and redemption. As a starting point from which to jump, trust us, The Paramount does a job in pulling in any doubters. All finely tuned hooks and deft touches. And ultimately very cool. Setting a high bar for coolness that might prove challenging for what’s to follow. One taken up by the urgent rush of Mighty River. A winding solo parts drift off into a West Coast Eagles vibe with the Sixties ideal of love and peace and “looking for the answers” alternative.
Having brushed away any cobwebs, we head into more laidback territory. Tingens Sanna Natur is all hints of Doors-y electric piano and (Don’t Fear The) Reaper guitar lines and The Long Now casts shades of languid Floyd given a pastoral and rustic dressing. A musical guide that leads into the dark desert highways of your mind.
REFERENCE POINTS
The album isn’t all cool alternative. Turn Back is one option that heads in a heavier direction. The insistent beat and simple but effective riff are tamed by keyboard swirls and the the soft spell of the McCartney-esque delivery sees a pleasing balance. And while we reference the likes of Blue Oyster Cult and Ghost, the easy groove and string enhancement on Bliss On The Line is pure front porch R.E.M.
By closing time they’re asking “is there a way to break the chain?” the curtain falls with You’re A Big Star where the hanging organ chords and jangling guitar shines like the star of the title. While the 2024/2025 version of Gong brings the Psychedelic age right up to date, Gin Lady step back with a real vintage piece of work.
