FIRST NEW MUSIC FOR FIVE YEARS...
Something You said is the new single from British-born, Paris-based artist Ala.Ni and it’s the first new music that she’s released since her acclaimed 2020 offering, ACCA – an album that featured collaborations with Iggy Pop and LaKeith Stanfield. The single is the first foretaste of Ala.Ni’s forthcoming yet-to-be-named, yet-to-be-scheduled new album and, as a foretaste, it’s an enticing one.
The songs for the new album were shaped by a two and a half year period that Ala.Ni spent living in Barbados, Grenada and Jamaica and, rumour suggests that the album will be a delicious, genre-blurring blend of calypso, jazz, bossa nova and golden-era song craft.
ALA.NI
Since debuting with the critically acclaimed You & I – a self-produced set of exquisitely restrained songs that earned her a slot on Later… With Jools Holland, Ala.Ni has steadily carved a singular path through contemporary music. She’s shared stages and studios with the likes of Mary J Blige, Andrea Bocelli and Jon Baptiste yet, despite these influences, Ala.Ni has remained resistant to categorization.
SOMETHING YOU SAID
Written after receiving a guitar sketch from longtime collaborator Marvin Dolly, Something You Said captures the headrush of an early attraction through close, fluttering, vocal arrangements and understated acoustic textures. Chunky bass provides the intro for a light, bluesy vocal that would make even Dionne Warwick sit up and take notice. The instrumentation is immaculately selected, with light percussion and bass most prominent and the harmonized backing vocals are heavenly.
If the objective was to blend those diverse musical styles – calypso, jazz, bossa nova and golden-era songcraft, then Something You Said has accomplished that mission with flying colours. Now: bring on that album – it promises to be something very special indeed.
