Churchfitters – The Cropredy 2025 Q & A Series: Interview

Fairport’s Cropredy Convention takes place, as ever, on the second weekend of August. Here is a little introduction to one of the bands on the bill: Churchfitters.

CHURCHFITTERS

Why Churchfitters? Nobody knows! Theyโ€™re not fitters and have absolutely nothing to do with churches. The nameโ€™s origin is lost in the mists of time but there is one aspect that suits them perfectly – quirkiness.

When your array of instruments includes a motorcycle petrol tank, a musical saw and a Mercedes Benzouki made from hubcaps thereโ€™s little point worrying if the name makes sense! Saucepan dulcimer, glass harp, Bing-Bong machine and magic boots all join some more conventional instruments (fiddle, banjo, sax and whistle to name a few) to back Rosie Shortโ€™s sublime voice.

These three flamboyant characters present an uplifting and entertaining show with a unique dynamism and describe their music as ‘Folk Unlimited’. Mike Harding calls it โ€œBrilliant and beautiful,โ€ while Dave Pegg says that the trio of Chris and Rosie Short and Boris Le Bret are the most musically inventive group he’s seen in decades.

Cropredy is a festival with a long history and iconic status. What sets it apart from other festivals and what does it mean to you to play there again?

It is indeed iconic, mainly due to the connection with the iconic band – Fairport. It’s that which sets in apart from other festivals along with the friendly, multigenerational atmosphere. Also the single stage format is great as nobody misses anything and everyone is brought together. We feel hugely honoured to be asked back to play here for a third time; it’s one of our proudest achievements.

What memories do you have of Cropredy?

So many memories! The thrill of playing to a huge and very receptive crowd has to be top of the list, especially as we felt included as part of the wider family; the Fairport family.

Given the state of the festival programme in the UK with cut backs and cancellations, whatโ€™s your view on the UK festival scene? What do you think it would take to restore it to a former glory?

That’s too big a question for me but I think Cropredy’s approach this year of reducing the size to guarantee a capacity crowd is very sensible.

Tell us about your plans post-Cropredy. What does the short and long term future hold?

More of the same for us Churchfitters. After 46 years playing together, it’s too late to stop now!

Tent or caravan โ€“ or hotel? Or arrive/play/go home?!

On our two previous appearances it was hotel but this year it’s tents. We are looking forward to being even more a part of the whole vibe.
