WE THOUGHT THINGS WERE WEIRD BEFORE…

One of life’s certainties is that new product is never far beyond the next bend in the track, as far as our prolific chums, Otherish, are concerned. Just last November, we described the Belfast-Hampshire combo’s fourth album, When I Was You as “…a tissue-challenging triumph” and, now, here they are again, with their new single, Go Xenon. And if we thought things were weird before, then we didn’t know the half of it…

But, before we get into this latest delight, let’s just recap for a moment. Otherish are a four-piece collective of multi-instrumentalists and composers, each with an irresistible propensity for exploring the outer limits of the musical envelope. Brothers Paul and Mark Bradley and colleague Francis Kane all hail from Belfast and fourth member, George Claridge is native of Winchester, Hampshire; the band are based in Bristol. Magical things happen when Otherish strike up and, once the ‘record’ button is pressed, the only thing that’s predictable is unpredictability…

A VOYAGE INTO THE UNKNOWN

Francis, Paul and George share the vocals on Go Xenon, with Francis also chipping in on piano and synth, whilst Paul adds electric guitar and bass, George acoustic guitar and Mark plays drums. But that summary only scratches the surface. Go Xenon is a voyage into the unknown.

Go Xenon takes the Otherish experience to a whole new level, a fact that becomes glaringly apparent with the avian sounds that get Go Xenon underway. Bursts of Genesis-flavoured prog rock and a few riffs get the spaceship off the ground, and then the weirdness REALLY starts…

A DISAPPOINTING CONVERSATION WITH A WELL-KNOW ‘MEGALOMANIAC’

But, perhaps, it’s the lyrics that really differentiates Go Xenon from any other chunk of run-of-the-mill weirdness, as they explore a disappointing conversation with a well-known “megalomaniac.” With phrases like: “Slabbering with Elon about the planet Xenon and how to get the green on…” and “You get ketamine between your teeth and your obscene intestine,” Otherish enter strange sonic realms of absurdity. Go Xenon is silly, it’s strange and, remarkably, it’s deadly serious. It’s also strangely melodic and utterly captivating. And that’s before we get anywhere near the stunning, shiner-sporting Elon Musk video…

Otherish have done it again! If anyone wants their points of musical reference to be totally re-aligned, I can recommend nothing better than a prolonged bout of Otherish-exposure. starting and finishing with Go Xenon.
