Just over a month ago we were honoured to premier the My Front Porch Neighbourhood video from this release. Now we can witness the full audio visual spectacular that is Craigย Gouldย & The Noble Thieves โ Live at Beckview Studios.
THE EVOLUTION OF THE NOBLE THIEVES
Accompanied by fellow guitarist/vocalist Rosie Faith, Lee Cogswell on bass and vox, and drummer Jonny Peters, Craig leads the way through new three songs which will form part of 2026’s Songs Of Love And War alongside a Songs From The Campfire selection. As he admits, the excitement created by The Thieves live shows have seen the songs from …Campfire develop in the live setting, so it’s a thrill to hear how Out Of The Woods, Dreamers and Burned have evolved and in their latest incarnation.
“Are you all ready? Well, if you’re ready...” joshes Craig as he quickly pulls on his game face and eases into “And she smiles,” and Out Of The Woods. It’s a journey of a set that he calls “some lows and some highs” and it sounds wonderful; the tempo reined in slightly, less bright but a tad more reflective. Rich and full and as Rosie comes on board with some subtle harmonies that complement so well and the band add their understated touches, you know the next half hour is going to be something special.
The warm mood is enhanced by the environment. A smart match in a space that offers a warm, collaborative atmosphere and deep commitment to capturing authentic performances. The blend of vintage gear and live room energy makes for a fascinating event.
ESCAPISM AND FUN
That new evolution of comfort and poignancy added to the …Campfire songs extends to Dreamers as Craig muses over the escapism offered in his thoughts and Burned is great fun. Rosie gets a verse and the singlaong chorus is made for an end of set rumble while the mid song breakdown is well milked with the wah-wah pedal and whammy bar teased and a crowd that finally takes the clapping along (“In time!“) hint.
Peppered between the tried and trusted are three brand new tracks. Old Days sees Rosie adding a few sparkles from the electric guitar and the brushwork that you get a nice chance to spot over Jonny’s shoulder on the video, is spot on. As is Craig’s very Neil Young vibe on a song that wouldn;t be out of place on Harvest and sounds exactly as you’d expect from the title as Craig ponders on changing his ways before he dies with not so much a ruefulness but a steely determination.
My Front Porch Neighbourhood might be familiar by now with the Gretsch at full power yet with some soft strums on the neck. A song that rolls along in an easy shuffle as he shifts from Young to Springsteen (who might add a sombre sobriety when he comes to cover it….) The image conveyed by the song title is very hometown; rustic and as the songs says, front porch.
A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME
The finale that is Red River leaves us cushioned in a cloud of country blues, lulled by Craig and Rosie whose “run away with me…tonight” angst toward the song’s close underlines the passion and commitment of the whole set. As a preview of what to expect in the next twelve months, it evokes the feeling that we had with …Campfire and the thrill of watching how those songs have grown.
