SONGS FOR THE SPINE
Wrexham-based band The Royston Club mark their return with their sophomore album Songs For The Spine.
The album kicks off with its electrifying single: Shivers, a track that has been building anticipation and setting the tone for what’s to come since its release back in April. With its pulsating energy and infectious hooks, Shivers immediately grabs listeners into the world of the album that the band has created. Lead guitarist Ben Matthias shared some insight into the song’s origins: “Shivers’ is a love song. I wrote it in the seaside village of Beaumaris, where the majority of this album was written.”
THE PATCH WHERE NOTHING GROWS
The Patch Where Nothing Grows was released nearly a year prior to the album’s debut, serving as an early glimpse into the band’s new era. Its opening guitar riff has since become one of the band’s most iconic, instantly recognisable to fans and is definitely a defining moment in their discography.
I need you around, I need you around
Without you, I drown, without you, I drown
CARIAD
Cariad stands out as a deeply emotional and personal track on the record, blending Tom Faithfull’s heartfelt vocals with Ben Matthias’ expressive guitar work. The track effortlessly ties in raw vulnerability with rich instrumental layers to create a powerful atmosphere both in studio and live settings.
The lyrics reflect the lasting ache of heartbreak, while the title, taken from the Welsh word for “love”, honours the band’s Wrexham roots, bringing a sense of cultural sincerity. As excitement builds for their upcoming album and tour, Cariad has already emerged as a fan favourite and a defining track for the rising indie rock band. The powerful vocal performance allows extra vulnerability which pair with the lyricism, making the song connect deeper with listeners.
My eyes burn holes through pictures of you and I
Cariad, I miss you all the time
Accepting it’s over
Curses & Spit follows as a passionate anthem, driven by raw emotion and fiery intensity. With its soaring choruses and gritty energy, the track channels defiance and catharsis, standing in powerful contrast to the tenderness of Cariad while reinforcing the band’s dynamic emotional range.
THE BALLAD OF GLEN CAMPBELL
The Royston Club conclude their second album with the The Ballad Of Glen Campbell. A reflective and cinematic closer, the song steps back from the album’s high-energy moments, offering a slower, more contemplative tone. It serves as a perfect closure for Songs For The Spine and allows listeners to reflect on the album.
The Royston Club will set off on their biggest UK tour in October to promote the album. They will also perform at major festivals this summer including TRNSMT festival, Kendal Calling and Reading & Leeds Festival. You can view all of The Royston Club’s tour dates here.
