Portal w/ Impetuous Ritual & Abduction – Rebellion, Manchester: Live Review

Portal and Impetuous Ritual return to UK shores and carry out a sonic evisceration on Manchester. Support comes from UK’s Abduction.

ABDUCTION

Abduction – the action of taking someone away by force or deception.

There is zero deception with Abduction, but the force they possess is huge. Having only gained entry for the last five minutes of their set, it is clear that A|V and his band are delivering as they always do. Their set at Fortress Festival earlier this year was spectacular. They’ve trodden the boards at the snug confines of Rebellion before and the huge queues to get in are testament to people wanting to see this band again.

The swelling masses in Manchester clearly like what they see as they finally get through the doors. A|V goads the crowd in gesture and in expletives; the payoff is massive and they set the scene for the evening, perfectly.

IMPETUOUS RITUAL

Impetuous – acting or done quickly and without thought or care.

Whilst the definition suggests otherwise, Impetuous Ritual allow time for their brooding aura to grow. Not for the first time on this eve, there is an unsettling drone washing over the crowd.

Taking the stage in their trademark loincloths, accessorised with various bits black metal style paraphernalia and a smattering of blood, the Aussies deliver a devastating spoliation.

The dense sound transfixes the huge crowd as they watch on intently. Stepping forth when moments of pause allow, the band gesture to the crowd; each one being met with universal acclaim. As things heat up, the crowd gets livelier as the impenetrable sound reverberates around Rebellion.

Building on the momentum that Abduction deliver earlier in the evening, Impetuous Ritual are a nihilistic beast, battering the crowd that are now shoulder to shoulder from front to back and side to side.

PORTAL

Portal; a doorway, gate, or other entrance, especially a large and imposing one.

Large and imposing. That is what Portal are, in many senses of the word. If Impetuous Ritual arenโ€™t destructive enough, Portal aim to level the land.

Their haunting spirit seeps through every nook and cranny of Rebellion. Smothered by thick fog and brooding lighting, the head dress of singer, The Curator, is imposing; cutting through the misty ether. It is the stuff of nightmares to see this band and the presence that they have upon entering the stage.

Drawing on their more recent releases, the Australian outfit spend an hour enchanting Manchester with a musical heft that only a handful of acts possess. You can see why the lay person would proclaim it to be โ€˜just noiseโ€™ but thatโ€™s part of the appeal; the act of being transported elsewhere, sonically. It is uncompromising and challenging.

Attending shows that are in auditoriums or theatres, usually offers a reverence to artists. People, usually, show respect by not talking during songs. There is an air of that feel on this night. Not because you wouldn’t be able to hear what people are saying, but the general notion of being utterly gobsmacked by the assault on the senses.

It is dense, macabre, crushing, tumultuous, horrific and heavy. It has been a long time since Portal were in the UK; hopefully there will not be such a gap until their next trip to the UK. Portal shows are more than a concert or gig. They are ritualistic, ceremonial gatherings.

  1. Huge shame that so many who queued missed Abduction as doors opened late. Staff dealt with the (rare for a metal gig) knobhead well. A brilliant performance by all.
