Larry Beckett & Stuart Anthony – Song Of The Old Lovers: New Single

First single from the upcoming album from the newest collaboration between writer/poet Larry Beckett and musician Stuart Anthony.

Dateline 12th September 2025 – Portland, OR

Critically acclaimed poet and songwriter Larry Beckett announces the release of his fifth album, Though We Have Only Love: The Songs of Jacques Brel, a tribute to the legendary Belgian singer and actor Jacques Brel.

Set for release on 9th January 2026 via The Orchard/Sony, the album reimagines 14 of Brelโ€™s iconic Fifties and Sixties chansons in a contemporary alt-rock style while staying true to their original melodies and harmonies. The album features Beckett on vocals, spoken word, and piano alongside long-time collaborator Stuart Anthony (vocals, guitar), with contributions from Mike Hodgkins (drums), Matt Canty (bass), and James Edge (piano, keys, flute). Together they breathe new life into Brelโ€™s catalog, balancing reverence with fresh, modern energy.

A GLIMPSE

The first single from the forthcoming album, Song Of The Old Lovers, with an arrangement by Stuart Anthony is a tantalising intro to the project. One that offers both a glimpse into the lyrical machinations contained within the languid Gallic arrangement. Poignant and full of lyrical gems – shared storms and crazy love, the loss of the touch of wonder – “even the rocking chair remembers,” “you know the words to all my spells” and aching reminiscences.

The mid song breakdown sees a metallic ring of strings contribute to the romanticism and Matisse imagery that’s perfectly captured in the video. However, it’s the return to the chorus that creates a poignant lull and emphasises how the passing of time might age the bones yet fails to dull the strength of the emotions.

THE VISION

A lifelong admirer of Brel, Beckett translated the lyrics into English with a poetic accuracy he felt was missing from past versions. โ€œUp to now, Brelโ€™s songs have not been faithfully translated,โ€ Beckett says. โ€œI wanted to capture both the poetry and the passion of his work while keeping aligned with the original French version.โ€

Spanning driving rock anthems to intimate spoken-word pieces and a shimmering flute quintet, the songs on the record explore the many facets of love. Beckettโ€™s literary and musical legacy adds weight to the project. He is celebrated for his decades-long work as a poetโ€”including his American Cycle that was published in 2021โ€”and as lyricist and arranger for the late Tim Buckley, with whom he co-wrote many songs including the timeless Song To The Siren, covered by countless artists worldwide.

The first single will be followed by two additional singles leading up to the full release of Though We Have Only Love – watch this space.
