Video premiere as Mudlow dip into the swing and storytelling heart of Kelly Joe Phelps’ Sally Ruby.
Brighton’s swamp-blues merchants Mudlow return with their third single from the forthcoming album Run Thru The Cover Crop: a stirring reimagining of Kelly Joe Phelps’ Sally Ruby. The single is out now via Juke Joint 500 and we have a premiere of the new video.
“We’ve lived with Kelly Joe Phelps’ songs for years,” say the band. “Sally Ruby felt just right. It has that swing and storytelling heart that resonates with us. This version is or way of tipping the hat to a real inspiration.”
Sally Ruby follows two earlier singles from the upcoming covers album Run Thru the Cover Crop, due on 17th October 2025. Each track sees Mudlow reinterpret the music that has shaped their identity, bending it through their swamp-noir style.
Known for their brooding, cinematic blend of blues and noir Americana, Mudlow inject Sally Ruby with a fresh rhythmic energy while maintaining the spirit of Phelps’ song writing. The track’s upbeat pulse contrasts with Mudlow’s signature swampy grit, offering fans something both original yet unmistakably Mudlow.
Kelly Joe Phelps (1959–2022) remains a towering influence in the Americana and roots world, celebrated for his masterful guitar playing, poetic lyricism, and haunting delivery. Sally Ruby first appeared on his 2001 album Sky Like A Broken Clock, a record that showcased his ability to fuse folk storytelling with blues depth and improvisational spirit. By revisiting the song, Mudlow pay heartfelt tribute to Phelps’ legacy while refracting it through their own shadowy, groove-driven lens.
