Police Dog Hogan – Gulbenkian, Canterbury: Live Review

Making a welcome return to Canterbury after 12 years, Police Dog Hogan are warmly greated by a well filled Gulbenkian of mostly first timers (as the poll conducted by promoter Debs Earl proved).

RETURNING IN FINE FORM

Police Dog Hogan responded with a setlist mainly centered round their last two records, the spontaneous Lightning Strike recorded over a few days at Middle Farm studios in Devon and the poppier and more layered Overground recorded in 2020 but only released post-covid.

The band was in fine form and even some tracks from their next LP to be released in spring 26! If the excellent Seven Kinds of Rain (another Hogan earworm) and the affecting tribute to James and Eddies fathers One Last Trip Around the Sun, it’s going to be a belter!ย

CHESTNUTS

The now customary unplugged session saw the band move to the front of the stage showcasing the bands great harmonies. The humourous Three Drinks A Day was prefaced by a warning by James that the subject might distress some but the band were more than happy to be available for sone emotional support during the intermission.

Some old chestnuts from the earlier times such as Galway Girl and From the Land Of Miracles or West Country Boy got a great reception. James sang lead on most tracks but Tim Dowling took over the reigns on his covid tale of foreign travel yearning Barcelona. An evening of good songs, good musicianship and some good banter! What’s not to like!?
