A TASTER
Scottish songstress Emma Miller will be releasing her debut album in February 2026 (watch this space…). The album will be entitled I Want to Be the Anchor and, to set the mood for the album, Emma is releasing a few tasters – the latest of which is her new single, Siren. Emma, it seems, has some pretty strong opinions on the subject of streaming (I’m with her on that one…) and, admirably, she’ll be withholding 50% of the new album from DSPs, making it only fully accessible via vinyl, CDs and downloads.
I Want To Be The Anchor will explore the themes of love, loss, the question of wanting children and the empowerment enjoyed by taking time to get to know oneself through “those dark moments of terrifying existentialism.”
A CALL TO HOLD ON TO OUR HUMANITY
Written in response to the overwhelming coverage of genocide and conflict that dominates our daily news feeds, Siren is Emma’s lament for the suffering of others and her call to hold on to our humanity. Taken from the viewpoint of someone suffering from apathy and the loss of hope, compassion and sense of self, it’s a song that asks whether we are capable of overcoming our differences in the name of peace. And Emma’s lyrics encapsulate the best – and the worst – of humanity all in one song.
PRISTINE PRODUCTION
It’s a soft piano ballad and the song’s structure and Emma’s delivery hint at the time she spent in the Tennessee countryside with Producer Nick Bullock, recording I Want To Be The Anchor. Nick’s production is pristine – I particularly like the subtle vocal harmonies – and Emma sings beautifully, as she builds towards her climatic plea: “Can we please have peace in this house?”
Edinburgh-based Emma takes inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush and Sarah McLachlan, and it shows. She’s building a solid reputation for herself, too, selling out shows in Scotland, receiving regular airtime on Scottish radio and has performed gigs across the USA. I Want To Be The Anchor promises to be quite a statement.
