Only The Poets – And I’d Do It Again: Album Review

After 10 years, Only The Poets grace us with their debut album – And I’d Do It Again.

THE DEBUT ALBUM

Only The Poets release their debut album And Iโ€™d Do It Again and fans are already obsessed.  14 perfectly crafted tracks showing their growth, reflection and vulnerability,  covering sounds from alt-pop to upbeat dance.  It navigates themes of heartbreak, jealousy, relationships and hope with each song seeking to capture the moment. The album shows their musical shift from their early indie sound to alt-pop ,with 80โ€™s synth sounds sprinkled within shaping the band to give them their present sound today.

Opening track Monumental discusses themes of relationships and knowing you were always the best option for a relationship. Another track that stands out is Emotionally Hungover; the first track from the album to see release. Itโ€™s a definite fan favourite. With relatable lyricism and strong electric guitar and upbeat drums, itโ€™s an invite to dance. Thinking Bout Your Ex while having sultry undertones, is a confronting track about coming to terms with insecurities within relationships. This differs from other tracks such as Madeline, which is raw and emotional, and Guess Sheโ€™s Cool, which again discusses themes of being hung up on your ex, no matter how hard you try to move on.ย

I particularly love how thereโ€™s an introduction to this debut album. The first track. And Id Do It All Again, provides us with a symphony of sounds almost inviting us to listen to this album as a big family. ย

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

As well as this, the Reading four-piece are big on giving back to the community. For their upcoming Brixton and Reading shows they called for unsigned artists to audition to be their support act. In addition, tickets are ยฃ1; the same price as their first gig 7 years ago in order to keep live music accessible for everyone.. Every pound from every ticket sold will be a donation to protecting grassroots live music in the UK. It is something they are very passionate about.ย

Itโ€™s clear to see that there is so much love and vulnerability in this project. As an audience, it is an honour to have this album shared with us. Having amassed and cultivated a loyal fanbase through dedicated touring and refining their sound, we have to hope that Only The Poets have more of this musical magic to share. I firmly believe the only way is up for them.ย
