Satori – Walking: Single Review

Slovenia’s ‘Special Accordionist,’ Jure Tori puts a new band together and ventures into jazz and soul for his new project. Walking, by Satori, is an instant earworm.

SATORI – THE LATEST PROJECT…

Satori is the latest in a long line of projects led by Slovenia’s ‘Special’ accordionist and composer, Jure Tori. Usually, it is said that Tori is: “…an accordionist and composer whose melodies smell of wine and soil and carry the air of the Pannonian Plain, the Mediterranean, the Alps and The Balkans.” However, that description doesn’t really cut it for Walking, the debut single from Satori. Because Jure has decided to try something a little different this time.

For starters, he’s (temporarily, I’m sure…) cast his accordion to one side and, instead, he’s moved across to keyboards. A whole bank of them. Secondly, he’s invited a few friends along to help cement his new direction. Vocalist Ursula Luthar, jazz guitarist Primoลพ Graลกiฤ, trumpeters Jan Adamek and Gerhard Ornig and double bassist Wolfram Derschmidt are all masters of their craft.

PLAY IT AGAIN!

Of course, Jure has never restricted himself to one particular musical style or genre. His extensive canon includes ventures into anything from tango to folk, ethnic to hard rock. And now, the chosen style is something that falls somewhere between jazz and soul, and wonderful it is, too. Walking is an immediate earworm. Jure’s lyrics tell the story of a young lady who moves from a village to the big city and revels in the anonymity she discovers there. She dons her headphones and enjoys her own musical world as she walks around, gaining inspiration for her own musical adventures.

The song is a fast shuffle, with drums, bass and Jure’s keyboards all playing a major part. Solos – Jure on his Fender Rhodes and Primoลพ on guitar – are fantastic and the whole thing evokes one of those fast, determined marches that we’ve all done. You know – those where people just seem to melt away as you surge forward. Sadly, Walking is all over and done with in just three short minutes and the listener is left with no alternative – put the stylus back at the beginning, and play Walking all over again.
