WRANG
Dutch black metal occupies a unique space in the extreme metal landscapeโless grandiose than its Scandinavian counterparts, less chaotic than the French underground, yet possessing a distinctive character all its own. Wrang have spent over a decade developing their sound within the Netherlands’ increasingly vibrant black metal scene, and with Verwording, their third full-length, they’ve crafted their most cohesive work to date.
The duo of Valr and Galgenvot formed Wrang in 2013, though they didn’t become fully active until 2015. In that time, they’ve established themselves as significant contributors to the Dutch black metal resurgence. Their early influencesโHorna, Taake, and Slaviaโprovided a solid foundation, but recent years have seen them develop beyond straightforward homage.
Verwording’s cover art speaks volumes: a sailing vessel battling turbulent seas beneath threatening skies, caught in perpetual motion without destination. It’s a fitting visual representation of the album’s thematic concernsโthe human condition of constant searching, the impossibility of satisfaction, the endless pursuit of something just beyond reach. The lyrical content explores societal critique alongside more abstract meditations on internal conflict, creating a work that transcends typical black metal misanthropy through genuine philosophical engagement.
STILSTAND
The album opens with Stilstand (“Standstill”)โan ironic title for a track that launches forward with immediate momentum. The opening riff delivers classic black metal tremolo-picking with raw urgency, whilst melodic guitar work from Valr provides a counterpoint to the rhythmic assault. The vocals, primarily from Galgenvot with guest contributions from Revenant and Carchost of Helleruin, are genuinely painedโhigh-pitched shrieks that convey real desperation rather than performative malevolence.
Up next, Entartete Kunst signals Wrang’s willingness to engage complex subject matter. Musically, the song expands the album’s sonic palette, incorporating atmospheric elements whilst maintaining aggressive momentum. There’s an almost anthemic quality to some passages that might seem incongruous for black metal, yet it works remarkably well.
NACHTEN IN WALHEIM
Selected as the album’s first single, Nachten in Walheim showcases Wrang at their most compelling. Unexpected Viking folk influences emerge here, adding Nordic traditional elements that somehow integrate seamlessly despite representing a departure from the established sound. The track maintains ferocious intensity whilst incorporating a sense of hard-won victory, creating emotional depth beyond mere genre exercise. The melodic lead guitar work soars above the sonic maelstrom with genuine beauty, whilst the vocals convey yearning that transcends typical extreme metal posturing.
Voor ons de zee (“The sea before us”) pulls back from overt folk influences whilst maintaining emotional complexity. The oceanic metaphor runs deep: like the sea itself, the music flows constantly, sometimes contemplative, sometimes overwhelming, but never static. The vocal delivery here takes on a more introspective quality, almost unbearably melancholic at times. This is music for solitary 3am moments when sleep eludes, and demons circleโmusic for staring at grey horizons whilst grappling with existential questions. The production choices create dynamic ebb and flow, with instruments deliberately receding and surging like tidal movements.

DE DUIVEL IS DE ANDER
De Duivel is de ander (“The Devil is the other”) evokes Sartre’s “Hell is other people” whilst adding diabolical dimensions. This may represent the album’s peak achievement, synthesising all of Wrang’s strengths. Punishing blast beat sections sit alongside moments of genuine beauty, where melodic lead guitar takes centre stage. The compositional sophistication belies the duo’s modest outputโthis is carefully constructed music, meticulously arranged and passionately performed. The rhythm section provides both stability and flexibility to accommodate frequent tempo shifts and dynamic changes.
The closing track, Bitjebauw, feels like a culmination, incorporating elements from across the album into a final statement. There’s triumph here, but also exhaustionโthe sense of a journey completed without definitive resolution, questions raised without easy answers. Atmospheric synth work adds texture without overwhelming the core black metal foundation. As the final notes fade, there’s a genuine sense of having experienced something substantial rather than merely consumed six tracks. That’s the hallmark of exceptional albumsโthey occupy consciousness long after playback ends.
REVERENCE & INNOVATION
Verwording succeeds by balancing reverence with innovation. Wrang clearly respect classic black metalโevident in every tremolo-picked riff and blast beatโbut refuse to merely recreate the past. They incorporate rock ‘n’ roll energy, folk melodicism, and atmospheric textures organically rather than as desperate innovation. This isn’t a band forcing evolution; this is musicians following their creative instincts wherever they lead, even beyond typical black metal boundaries. Guest contributions from Revenant and Carchost provide crucial vocal variety, preventing monotony whilst maintaining cohesion. Different textures and timbres keep the ear engaged across the runtime, demonstrating smart compositional thinking often overlooked in black metal
For long time Wrang fans, Verwording represents a natural evolution from De vaendrig whilst offering enough surprises to maintain interest. For newcomers, this serves as an ideal entry pointโshowcasing everything the band does well whilst being their most cohesive work to date. And for black metal fans broadly, this reminds us that the genre retains vitality when approached with genuine passion and creativity rather than mere historical reverence.
Wrang have created something genuinely specialโan album capturing our era’s restless spirit whilst tapping into timeless human preoccupations. We’re all adrift on stormy seas, all searching for something unnamed, all torn between conflicting desires. This album doesn’t offer easy answers or false comfort, but it provides catharsis, community, and the knowledge that we’re not alone in our struggles. Sometimes that’s enough. Sometimes that’s everything.
