Balu Brigada – Manchester Academy 2: Live Review

Balu Brigada – Manchester Academy 2 – 3rd May 2026

A RARE ELECTRICITY

Balu Brigadaโ€™s return to Manchester brought a rare kind of electricity to Academy 2. The sort that doesnโ€™t wait for a headliner, doesnโ€™t need a warmโ€‘up, and doesnโ€™t rely on spectacle. Following supporting the magnificent Twenty One Pilots on their Clancy World Tour, the New Zealand duo waltzed onstage to a sold out room full of vibrance and energy, and within seconds of the first groove dropping, it was obvious why their name has been circulating so loudly across the altโ€‘pop scene. Them and the fans alike were raring to go, so much so that they didnโ€™t ease into the set; they slid into it, smooth and assured, as if the venue had been built specifically for their brand of rhythmโ€‘driven, neonโ€‘lit pop.

As the set unfolded, Balu Brigada leaned into their strengths: slick grooves, sharp hooks, and a stage presence that felt effortless rather than performed. Every beat, every synth line, every vocal harmony landed with the kind of precision that only comes from a duo who know each otherโ€™s instincts inside outโ€ฆ which they do since they are brothers. It wasnโ€™t hype; it was chemistry. The kind that makes a room feel smaller in the best possible way. Tracks like So Cols, Designer and Backseat all showcased their ability to blend polished pop with a more textured, liveโ€‘band grit. The brothers bounced off each other with an ease that made the performance feel almost conversational, oozing with charisma.

A MASTERCLASS

It was a masterclass of cohesion, control and entertainment all in the space of 90 minutes, fans were not left wanting moreโ€ฆ they were left speechless because the brothers from New Zealand left everything they had on that stage and on the dance floor too with them getting into the crowd, embracing themselves with the fans themselves for the very last song. If tonight was any indication, Balu Brigada arenโ€™t just backseat drivers anymore- they are grooving all the way to sold out venues worldwide and its not going to get any smaller anytime soon.
