After gaining a reputation as a thrilling live band, Newcastle based Dutch Elm release their stunning self titled debut album.

IMMERSIVE
Dutch Elm are Matthew McKenna and Lewis Ticket on guitar, Callum Bell on bass and Liam Bird on drums with all contributing to vocals and working together to create an astonishing piece of music. Formed in 2016 it seems strange that it been almost 10 years before a full album release but their loyal fans have been rewarded for their long wait.
The self-titled album from Dutch Elm is very much a guitar based instrumental piece of music in which they pile on layer upon layer of immersive music. Made up of 6 separate pieces, the preference is to look at the album in its entirety. That doesnโt mean it needs to be considered a โconceptโ album although there is a cohesiveness from one track to another.
We are told the album, โsubtly reflects on themes of environmental decline and political tension.โ There is an intent to express this is what we are about. A kaleidoscope of guitar effects, sounds and playing styles making an all encompassing vibe. How you interpret each track is up to you, they create the soundscape what you imagine is up to you whether it be dystopian, cosmic, futuristic or whatever. Tempo, texture and dynamics change regularly within what at times seems frantic but there is structure and control to avoid it becoming just one huge mash of metallic noise.
INTENSE & POWERFUL
There is intensity, there is power but there isnโt gloom. A brightness and lightness hides in many places along with the crashing chords and ringing multi guitar effects. The label โmath-rockโ has been afforded them but that implies having a rigidity, being formulaic or over complex. Yes, there is clearly precision and a purpose but itโs not mechanical or robotic. You can envelop yourself in the music and drift off to wherever you want to be taken and enjoy the musicality and listening experience very much like you can with God Is An Astronaut or Long Distance Calling.
