Final single from Matt Fryers ahead of the album release – Inside My Head heads into full confessional mode.

INTENSELY EMOTIVE

It’s as if he planned it. The final single before the release of the That Was Then album – one that’s become known as ‘the song no-one was meant to hear’ – is a stunning and intensely emotive account of living with depression, past trauma and mental health struggles.

Known for not cutting corners when it comes to the raw and unfiltered, Matt tears up his own rule book with what could easily be his most open and vulnerable recording to date. Unlike the rest of the album, Inside My Head was never intended for release. The new collection of songs is intensely personal, each reflecting on emotions and experiences throughout his life, yet Inside My Head comes from a much more private place that he never
set out to expose.

A CATHARTIC OUTLET

The track began life more like a diary entry, written entirely for Fryers himself, never meant as a song; more cathartic outlet and a confidential expression of the unspoken thoughts and feelings that overwhelmed his mind. Perhaps, and maybe the reason for its release, Inside My Head is the biggest part of the story.

Musically, Fryers’ signature tumble of acoustic guitar and distinctive vocals create an intimate, atmospheric
backdrop. The central focus is the lyrical content, yet the track expands with a subtle decoration and swelling accompaniment. “There are songs you write because you want people to hear them, then there are songs that
write themselves because you need to get things out of your mind,” he says. ”Inside My Head was always the latter. I never wanted anyone to hear it, but eventually I realised it belonged on the album. It’s the most honest thing I’ve ever written, and it pretty much explains why most of my music exists ”

For listeners who have experienced depression, trauma or periods of profound mental distress, the song may feel uncomfortably familiar. For others, it offers a glimpse into a place that is often difficult to articulate — the private chaos that can exist behind an otherwise ordinary face.
