Contemporary Brooklyn indie-rock outfit Slow Fiction are bringing garage rock energy back to New York City!
Today, we’re able to share Slow Fiction’s new single, Top 10 Movie Scenes.
As the band wrote of the track: “Writing through a false lens allows you to put yourself in the minds of people you don’t know, and create storylines that don’t exist. The idea behind this track came about during a paranoid delusion… and a melody followed shortly after.”

Slow Fiction kicked started their career with the release of a series of awesome singles released this year. Nameless Harm, International Cherry, The Cut and Niagara have all met with acclaim from outlets such as Alt Citizen, Bands Do BK, We All Want Someone To Shout For, and more. In turn, the band has appeared on bills all over the city, performing alongside acts such as Sports Team, Girl Skin (with whom they toured this spring), Native Sun, The Wants, Thus Love, Dead Tooth, and more.
They’ve recently played New Colossus Festival and even filmed a Paste session during the fest!
Their self-titled Slow Fiction EP is now set for release on 16th February 2023. The project was mixed and mastered by Jonathan Schenke (Parquet Courts, The Drums, Snail Mail, Mannequin Pussy, Bodega).
After moving from New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia, band members Julia Vassallo (vocals), Joseph Skimmons (guitar), Paul Knepple (guitar), Ryan Duffin (bass), and Akiva Henig (drums) came together in New York City in March of 2021 via Craigslist ads and mutual friends.

Their early months were spent playing shows around New York before releasing their first 4 singles nearly a year after the band’s conception. Following a tour of the East Coast in the spring of 2022, the band settled in Brooklyn, where they shifted their focus to evolving their sound and solidifying their identity as a band. Since then, Slow Fiction has been busy writing and recording their anticipated self-titled EP.
With what Alt Citizen called a “late 90s/early oughts rock tinge with a bit more edge,” Slow Fiction is a synthesis of fervent musicianship and honest lyricism. When chaos becomes the norm, people are left with unbridled emotions, hearts full of tension, and a need for expression. A result of living in a time when expecting the unexpected is ordinary, the band has drawn from their influences and environment to create something that is both inspired and uniquely theirs.
