The superb Jericho was the first single, previewing the forthcoming Blue Rose Code album Bright Circumstance, and provided an encapsulation of the Blue Rose Code live sound that has been wowing audiences up and down the UK. The second single from the album, Never Know Why, has now been released, and shines a light on another exciting Blue Rose Code musical configuration.
On, Never Know Why, we are treated to a winning combination of Highlife and jazz music. On the song, Stuart Brown and Gus Stirrat’s swing rhythms and Lyle Watt’s sparkling guitar lines create an intoxicating atmosphere. Paul Harrison’s piano and the horn section (with an arrangement by Paul) add a joyous danceability to the song, with Liam Shortall’s trombone phrases a particular musical highlight.
This song is an outstanding example of the impressive range of Ross Wilson’s song writing, that can weave music genres together into something very special, that could only be uniquely Blue Rose Code. Ross’s exceptional vocal delivery convoy’s his passion and wonder for life and living, bringing as ever an authenticity and emotional articulation of thought, and feeling. A striking moment in the song is when Ross sings, “But don’t deny yourself the light inside yourself, Just turn your eyes,” followed by Paul’s sizzling piano solo. A great moment in a superb song.
As a reminder, the new album is due for release in early May, and will be available on CD and vinyl, and digitally. The album release will be supported by a series of UK wide shows. On the evidence of the two singles released so far it could be one of the best Blue Rose Code releases to date.
Here is the official video for Never Know Why with some brilliant animation by Magnus Joss.
