It’s difficult to pigeon hole Bridge City Sinners in to one genre and I get the feeling that they don’t want to be put into a single category to sit nicely and fit the mould. These guys bend the rules and the results are extraordinary. Lead singer Libby Lux’s vocals are soulful, clear and full of punch, she flits seamlessly between jazz queen to a heavy metal vocalist and although this is unexpected she is more than capable of making it truly captivating. The whole band are dynamic, soulful and undeniably talented.
Age Of Doubt opens with Break The Chain. “Agony seems to follow me, why won’t it let me be, dragging me down”, the opening lyric, is dark and full of angst. You can hear the authenticity in these words and the raw belief in learning to accept that change is inevitable and we must learn to move with the tide. The banjo pushes this song along and the layering of instruments to build is sublime.
The brass in The Crawl MSTR is truly beautiful and takes you straight to New Orleans. Towards the middle of this track, the vocal delivery and brass become more urgent and intense ; the lyrics speak of “thinking ’bout who I could have been” and the juxtaposition between the jazz aspects of the brass and the urgency of the vocals makes for an enthralling song that you are compelled to listen to on repeat.
With End of The War we enter a more folky/bluegrass vibe with a fabulous line “only the dead see the end of the war.” The fiddle in this track is much more central and creates a powerful soundscape for this alternative number. Shame starts like a dreamy California day but quickly becomes more intense, like a horse galloping, the vocal pitches in more breathy in this track to start. The fiddle plays a central part in this song matching the vocal melody and virtuoso harmonising. The banjo creates a rolling and continuous melody within this the song; a true driving force.
Bridge City Sinners will blow you away with their diversity and musical abilities. Their delivery is full of power and passion. Their songs are far from bland and will have you wanting more!
