Hamish Anderson has established quite a reputation for himself. The ex-Gary Clark Jr and George Thorogood sideman was recognized by Total Guitar Magazine as one of 2028’s Top Ten Best New Guitarists and, more recently, he was the subject of a feature in the August 2020 issue of Guitar Player. He’s got two previous albums to his name – 2016 debut Trouble and the 2019 follow-up, Out of My Head. Both were highly acclaimed, with Out of My Head receiving an Independent Music Award for Best Blues Album.
And now, after a 5-year wait, Hamish’s third album, Electric, is complete, and poised for release later this year – we’ll be bringing news of THAT event in due course – and, in the meantime, Hamish is whetting our collective appetite by drip-feeding us with a few tasters. Earlier this year, lead single Late in the Evening made its welcome appearance, and now here comes another – follow-up single You’re Mine is now with us, and it’s a BIG record with a BIG sound.
With his music, Hamish pays tribute to his 70s heroes – a list that includes the likes of The Faces, T.Rex and, probably most noticeably, Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac. Those are influences that will feature prominently on Electric, but which, perhaps take a lower billing on You’re Mine than an even more famous pair of heroes – but I’ll come to that shortly.

Hamish has dubbed Electric as his “Love letter to the electric guitar” and the album is already being lauded as his “…most complete and mature artistic statement to date” and, to help preserve the phenomenal energy of his live shows, Hamish has enlisted the services of his touring band for the album: Lauren Stockner on bass and Pete Marin on drums, along with guests Jerry Borge on keyboards and Jessy Green on strings.
Asked to provide an overview of the new single, You’re Mine, Hamish says: “It’s a song that is quite vulnerable and open in its lyrics but, with the music, it has such a powerful and triumphant feel to it that I enjoyed mixing those two elements together. It was also a song that I knew had to have strings on it. We were lucky to have Jessy Green, who has done a lot of work with the Foo Fighters add these beautiful strings.”
You’re Mine is one of those songs that hits you right between the shoulder blades. A strong echo-y drumbeat sets the mood, and a soaring slide guitar lick establishes the mood. The listener is immediately reminded of George Harrison, and that’s not the only Beatle reference that comes to mind, either – Hamish’s lyrics have a strong Lennon flavour, as does Anderson’s delivery of them. The fuzzy backing guitars add to that sought-after 70s feel; there’s a strident confidence to You’re Mine that bodes so very well. Electric is shaping up to be one hell of an album.
