Inspired by the landscapes, culture and traditions of rural Sweden, Moþir is a piece of work that delves into the ancient ideas of feminity, of motherhood and death,. The themes are portrayed in a dark orchestral setting, aiming to shed light upon a philosophy and religion of old.
Ludvig Swärd’s latest creation embraces both nurturing warmth and the cold inevitability of fate, woven through themes of creation, destruction, and renewal, producing a sound as ancient as the Earth itself. Having had the doors to Scandinavian atmospheres opened by Wardruna, there’s a similar stirring depth in the arrangements where evocative voices build and create a quasi-religious environment that’s as cinematic as the barren landscapes.
Ancient wisdoms, feminine deities, runic symbols and magical incantations are explored through sweeping strings and dark rhythms. An underlying sense of drama cloaks the arrangements as Tunridor eases into Urd. Yes, the mainstream TV appeal of Vikings and The Last Kingdom might have alerted a wider audience to the nuances of the genre. Moderstårar (‘Mother’s Tears’) takes a more stark and spare turn with the plucked strings before Jord and Disar provide a funereal pace yet offer an uplifting chill.
The essence is one of sobriety and as the sequence reaches a finale, there’s a sense of mournfulness and resignation. Possibly goes with the territory but there’s no question that Forndom is as complete a document of the mood that encapsulates a culture and philosphy.
Recorded and mixed by Swärd himself, Moþir features haunting performances from collaborators Thomas von Wachenfeldt (Bards of Skaði) on violin, Janne Posti (Häxkapell, Sons of Crom) on choral vocals, and Draugurinn, whose presence evokes the spirits of forgotten times. The album’s arrangements evoking a sombre reverence for ancient traditions and the cyclical nature of existence.
